I'm going to start upgrading a home theater speaker system that I've had unchanged for about 20 years now that I've moved into a new house with a dedicated media room. In respect to the front channel speakers, I currently have Infinity SM 112s so I am sure that whatever I get will be a big improvement. I have a Sony STR-DG810 av receiver which I will upgrade at some point but not in the near future. My listening is probably a 50/50 split between music and movies/tv. My room is 12' x 23' with 8' ceiling.
One question I have is what purpose is served by speakers with a high max watt rating? Most receivers that I look at do not exceed a 115 watts per channel output so what benefit do you get from speakers that max at 200 or more?
My budget is probably not going to exceed $800 for the pair, so any recommendations for speakers that would fit in that price range would be appreciated. I've been driving myself crazy looking at reviews for Polk, Klipsch, Boston Acoustics, etc.
