Bass Null with Nearfield Sierra-1 Computer Speakers

Hello all,

I was wondering if anyone has any ideas about how to remedy a problem I am having with my Ascend Acoustics Sierra-1s. I am currently using them as computer speakers and am thus only about 3 feet away from them. My desk is about 2 feet from the wall of the room and the speakers are on stands behind the desk (with about 5 inches between the speakers and the wall because the Sierras are rear-ported).

I have never been all that impressed with the amount of bass from this arrangement. When I slide my chair back from the desk, so I am about 10 feet from the speakers, they sound INFINITELY better. Much, much more bass and the imaging is 1000x better. Though I understand there are some inherent limitations with near field listening positions, I was wondering if anyone had any placement ideas to at least counteract the lack of bass. I am probably sitting in a big bass null in the middle of the room, but I can't really figure how to make it better without putting the speakers on the opposite wall and having the desk arranged with my back to other wall.

Anyone with a great sounding desktop set up have any ideas?

Thanks!

Are you using a receiver? Have you tried running Room Correction software?

I'd have to see a room diagram with measurements to be sure, but my guess is that the null is caused by your distance from the wall behind you. Moving away from the speakers reduces that distance and the null goes away.

Attached is a very rough sketch from what I could do at work. There is no receiver to handle room correction, just a iMac running through a basic DAC

I believe my hypothesis correct. If the wall behind you is 1/4 wavelength away within the 40Hz-100Hz bass bandwidth you'll get a cancellation at that frequency. That encompasses the range of 2.8 to 7 feet. Your listening position seems within that range.
