Excellent. This is the type of thread I've been waiting for. My ISF-patched KRP-500M suffers from reddish tint and elevated black level. I know it can look better than it does. I desperately want to do a full reset, but I'm a little nervous about doing it, thinking that it won't work or I'll screw something up. This thread will be perfect for those of us with questions and concerns.
I'll likely stick with my 500M for at least 3 more years. ...I use it for everything, PC, Xbox, PS & TV. The only thing I don't like about it is the heat it makes during the summer; and it's somewhat big & heavy, so moving it with me (in the backseat of my car) isn't fun.
I like the 1080p resolution, but since I sit about 5ft from it, it's not totally perfect for PC gaming. But I love the blacks, damn are they nice: the only time I'll upgrade to a new TV is when 4K gets good blacks/color/etc, & is at a reasonable price-point.
Yeah, I used to use the VGA cord with my old laptop from 2007. But in early 2011 I got a gaming desktop and went full HDMI ever since. ...But I certainly appreciated the 1080p via VGA, because my Panasonic 800U wasn't able to do it.

Just be glad you aren't sitting out 10 feet, or else you may have already felt the itch to upgrade (this year in particular)...try imagine transporting a 65" behemoth.
That's a recent development, the announcement of which I never saw. I'm gonna' disagree as usual, though, especially since the only way to buy one is by way of second-hand.

A TV 65" is really meant for two or more people viewing the same content. I've learned over the 3yrs (with my 500M), that 50" is perfect for 1 person @ sitting 5 to 6ft away. ...When I used to sit 9ft away from it, I thought 50" was too small, but then I just moved my lounge chair closer, and was happy again.
...As a side note to PC-gaming, I've found that the 500M's 4:4:4 Chroma is AMAZING for super-sampling image quality! Battlefield 4 with a Radeon R9 290 running at 200% resolution looks pretty damn nice.
Because with my 50", I can comfortably lean back in a chair, with my feet stretched out almost touching the base of the TV. ...And at that distance and at that size I don't have to move my head much when playing video games, and I can't easily distinguish individual pixels.
However, when I tried the same thing on my friends new 65" Panasonic plasma, I could see the dirty little pixels more easily, and depending on the game I was playing I'd have to move my head & my eyes.
I just feel 50" is the best size for 1 person who is viewing at "PC like distances." ...Plus, anything bigger than 50" doesn't fit in the backseat of my 1971 Galaxie 500
Thanks so much for this guide. I have finally found a colorimeter that I can borrow for free from a coworker. I hope to get started on the whole process Sunday. Hopefully I can find my years old ControlCal license key and get everything connected and working. Found my old RS232-to-USB adapter and straight-through cable. Just need to get the software installed and working on the new laptop.
2. Can you set it using the service menu on most Pioneers without needing controlcal ?
3. D-Nice in an old Controlcal thread stated "Whatevel you do, please do not touch the ABL setting. You will screw up your display." That was in 2008. Does this apply to 2009 models ?
This is an older thread, you may not receive a response, and could be reviving an old thread. Please consider creating a new thread.
