Sony VPL-HW55ES Shipping Estimates

Thread Starter
I've asked this a couple of times within threads and can't get a response so thought I'd ask one more time. Anyone ordered the HW55 from other than Sony within the last month and received it yet? Also, what are people being told as far as estimated shipping times? Three weeks for me and so far no sign of it being shipped which I find ridiculous. I prefer the Sony but beginning to wonder how much longer it's going to take and would just like to get an estimate. I've talked to Sony which only tried to get me to order directly from them, said I'd get it shipped immediately.

Is there no way an authorized dealer can get a ship date? Anyone know if Sony is still shipping pre orders and not even shipping current placed orders yet?

I pre-ordered from AVS the Friday before Thanksgiving and received it on December 12th. I almost got the Epson 5030, glad I waited for the Sony.

Ordered mine a while back...I'm being told that Sony says it will drop ship to me via fedex ground on the 28th (which is a Saturday, so not likely). More likely it will ship on Monday the 30th, which is a shame, because I was hoping to have it for New Year's Eve. Oh well, I got a nice deal on it so it's worth the wait...I hope.

We have several that we will receive on the 31st, but they are all committed. We have another order in, but do not have a delivery date for those yet.

Sony is still filling all of their backorders. We should have more in stock soon after the 1st of the year too ( at least that's the plan ). smile.gif

Thanks for all of the replies, didn't know it was going to take this long but think it'll be worth the wait. Theater room is ready, ceiling mount is already in, everything is done except hanging the projector and plugging it in. Guess I'm getting impatient but definitely looking forward to it arriving.

Thanks for starting this thread. I am in the same boat as you and had considered calling Sony. I ordered mine on 11/29, the day after Thanksgiving, at a local dealer and still waiting. The install has been rescheduled a couple of times already due to delays from Sony shipping out the unit to the dealer.

Any updates from HW55 owners and if you've received yours yet,  when was it ordered? Four weeks for me and still no projector.  Is this normal at this time, getting a little worried as my credit card was charged when I ordered it. I just keep being told Sony is still filling back orders but should be caught up soon.

We have shipped a bunch of them this week and are currently waiting for our next shipment.

Thanks, were these previously orders from weeks back or recent. Wish I'd known more about your sales when I joined the forum. At least I know for future reference, thanks for the information.

Japan? They're not assembled in China like most everything else these days?
No Japan. But I think the lenses for this model are made in China. Don't know for sure.

I put in a call to my dealer to check on the status. After reading your post, I am already dreading the news that I will be getting. It is now 6 weeks since I placed the order and the super bowl party plans are dependent on its delivery and install.

I feel your pain! I was hoping to have it for yesterday's playoff games because I was originally told that they were arriving around Christmas day. Now I'll set my goals on the NFC/AFC championship game smile.gif.

It seems that just about every authorized dealer is in the same boat. The 55es owners thread is very quiet because nobody seems to be getting their new toys...The Sony store says that they have them in stock, but I paid quite a bit less than their full retail price, so it looks the extra price I will be paying is patience;)

FWIW, I placed my order with AVS on 12/23 and it shipped on 12/30. I think I was rather fortunate given the apparently limited supply. Hope you guys get yours soon as well.

I ordered December 5th from an authorized retailer and still don't have it either. I'd almost rather have paid full retail and ordered straight from Sony so at least we could have enjoyed it over the holidays. I just find the whole experience dealing with a new Sony product a pain and it's always the same. I can understand a couple of weeks but going on five weeks and not even shipped is unacceptable. I just wished I had an estimated date at this point.

Why are you blaming Sony? Ever think that the authorized vendor is jacking you around because they are getting more money from people who paid more and just put you on the bottom of the list? I've seen this happen more than once. Greed is a powerful thing when it comes to an item which doesn't have positive inventory.

That's possible but there seems to be lots of others who ordered in the same time frame who also haven't received theirs. Sony always seems to have the same issue on new product launches. As I stated on an earlier post my credit card was charged December 5th and I'm trying to verify if this time frame is normal.

There was a reason I asked others who they ordered from and when and if they had received their projector. Did AVS order a large number of projectors early on and have enough on order to cover orders placed in the last couple of weeks? If not then other "authorized dealers" have an issue. I've spoken to numerous dealers and non of them have been able to get one any sooner and can't give me an accurate date to receive one. I've been to two large local Sony dealers and they just recently received their in store demo HW55's and neither of them were happy with Sony's delay in them receiving their projector.

Some of them were from as late as the 23rd of December.

We are a Diamond status Sony dealer. We ordered on the first day that Sony would take orders and we have placed several orders with Sony for more HW55ES projectors.

Does anyone know how I can acquire a unit in white (VPL-HW55ES/W) in the U.S.? I see it online everywhere in white, which matches my multipurpose viewing/living room, but I can't find it in the States.
Can't even get it in black except directly from the sony store...nobody seems to have them in stock. I'm pretty sure white is non US only.

We can only get black. As for availability - AV Science has them coming in on a regular basis. The secret is to order one and get on the waiting list. We don't charge you until it arrives and we ship it to you. You might wait a week or two. However, " good things are worth waiting for " ! smile.gif

This isn't any different unfortunately from last year with the HW50. Demand exceeds supply apparently.

Face it, Sony is pretty shrewd - If you've noticed, for at least the last few years they have kept the PJ's to themselves at product launch, selling them exclusively through the Sony stores for a period of time and then slowly allowing them to trickle out to distribution. In this model they capture market share and maximize their profit margin while excitement is high. why not get MSRP for themselves before they sell to distribution at half that!?!?! Conspiracy theorist? Maybe...... but sure makes sense, doesn't it?

It isn't really shrewd, it is good business in terms of price discrimination especially when your product has value that may be perceived at or above MSRP. Nearly every business that is actually successful does this. If you want it "right now", you pay a premium. If you can wait a few weeks, you pay a few $100 less from an authorized dealer. AVS isn't waiting months to get your order. Sony has no moral obligation to give more PJ's to their vendors either. Their vendors are in a relationship where Sony is trying to generate more profit by expanding their coverage without direct cost to them. No big conspiracy....just smart business. If Sony could sell every single PJ they manufacturer at full MSRP off their website they would. But they can't, so they don't, and give other businesses, like AVS, a chance to make a living by selling Sony's products in ways they can't execute efficiently.

Now, if Sony was charging above MSRP and there was lack of supply...well, that is worthy of a conspiracy theory.

Side topic: Also, sometimes a middleman makes real sense as well since devices in this price range usually need some sort of fostered relationship to make the transaction happen. My guess is the sales team here probably puts more effort into each sale that we think they do. I mean sure, some are probably "order me a 55ES" but some might be months of a person waffling back and forth, asking for information before they settle in on one. This forum is indirectly sales arm for AVScience, do not forget that. Part of the reason they can offer the prices the do is we, as forum users, act as crowd source advertisers giving very valid opinions but also can act as a voice of reason when helping people decide between products in terms of value proposition. This place is amazing in all reality. Could you imagine going to a Best Buy and seeing 100's of people, at any given time, there where the customers all talked to each other about the good and bad of an item and only used the salesman on a selected basis? It would be mind blowing...and that is what AVS is.

I ordered mine from AVS right before the new year and already have it, so no complaints from me! Thanks AVS and Mike!
I ordered mine from the company that did all the rest of my home theater install. The order was placed December 8th. They told me expected delivery date was January 10th.
On January 10th, no delivery and when they called their Sony Rep he said a firm delivery date would be given the following Monday.
On the 13th the Sony rep told my dealer that Sony was not commiting to any firm shipping dates.
As I had only paid a 50% deposit on my final HT items the vendor has offered a return of my funds if I find somewhere that can get me a 55ES before my Super Bowl party. (Haha, I have 16 people waiting to know if they have somewhere to visit on Feb 2nd). I am not really interested in paying MSRP. So I guess I will just wait my turn.
