I bought my first full stereo/HT kit back in 2002 when I was just out of college and the receiver (a Rotel RSX1055) is finally showing its age. It doesn't always recognize Dolby Digital signals, does not have HDMI inputs, and I'm getting popping and crackling noises from my rear speakers. I've got a mixed bag of gear now. Sound quality is very important to me and I listen to 2 channel a lot w/ a sub, but I do like to watch movies. I don't tinker with settings too much, just set it and forget it. Here is what I have now: Rotel RSX1055 (that seems to be having issues and certainly lacks modern HDMI inputs and decoding options), Rotel RB1080 2 channel amp (powers my L and R channel), Oppo BP83 (mostly for CD and SACDs), Apple TV. Speakers are Monitor Audio RS6 up front, Energy Connoisseur center channel, and in wall surrounds (bought a new house and they were there), Panasonic plasma TV.
I'd like to upgrade my Rotel receiver and continue to do what I do now - hook my L and R channels up to the dedicated Rotel amplifier, and leave the other surround channels to the AVR. I already have an Apple TV so airplay is handled. Any suggestions? When I bought the Rotel receiver, I bypassed the usual brands of my youth (sony, pioneer, denon, onkyo) thinking the Rotel was a higher quality product. Nearly 12 years later, the Rotel served me well, but it is time to move on. Any suggestions considering I'd prefer sound quality and reliability over most everything else?
