Would that work?

MY Led HDTV we watch OTA from TV, OTA from computer and Movies from internet, etc...
I would like the HDTV to output the digital sound into the amp when we watch TV automatically without having to hook up some kind of switch.
Does HDMI carry the complete Dolby sound out of the computer ?

My system uses a cable from an internal motherboard SPDIF connector to the Nvidia gtx260 PCIE video card which has a DVI to HDMI 24+5 adapter attached.
Then the sound will go to the HDTV on the HDMI cable.

The HDTV has a digital coax output.

HDMI does carry the complete dolby sound but if I'm reading correctly you are going DVI to HDMI via an adapter. I f that's correct it won't work. DVI only carries a video signal and is passing that to the HDMI adapter. Can you run a SPDIF cable to your amp? That would carry the dolby signal.

No, audio data is multiplexed with the video data. The card will output audio through the DVI to HDMI adaptor.

Yes you are correct it can do this sometimes with correct hardware.
Is it 5.1 dolby or is it just stereo when this occurs?

It depends on the destination. If it's tv and only capable of stereo, it will be in stereo.

This depends on your TV. Some TVs accept bitstreams like Dolby Digital on their HDMI inputs and pass them out of their digital audio output. Some TVs only accept PCM (stereo). Even if you configure TV's output for 'bitstream and PCM' , it could apply only to output from TV's own tuner, not passed on from HDMI. What is really frustrating, is that you will almost never find it in TV specs, and even most manuals make only a very brief mention of it somewhere.

If your TV can accept and pass bitstreams, you just set you audio card S/PDIF output to allow both PCM and encoded formats, and your HDMI will carry it to TV.

Some video cards can send Dolby audio this way. You will need to install the ac codec on your pc. I had a ton of difficulty making this work on my pc. Good luck
