Aside from new TVs for 2014, Sharp announced a new universal disc player at its press conference today. The SD-WH1000U can play Blu-rays, DVDs, CDs, and SACDs, but most importantly, it's the first universal player that is compliant with WiSA (Wireless Speaker and Audio) Association standards for the wireless transmission of uncompressed audio.
The Sharp SD-WH1000U is the first universal disc player to be compliant with WiSA standards.
The SD-WH1000U can transmit up to eight channels of 96 kHz/24-bit audio wirelessly to WiSA-compliant speakers, or you can use the optional VR-WR100U bridge with non-WiSA amps and speakers; the player also transmits 1080p video wirelessly, and it provides three HDMI inputs, two USB ports, and an Ethernet port for online content.
The player will carry an MSRP or $4000, and the bridge will cost $600. Both will be available in the spring.
