List of components:
L&R Ch. Klipsch RF-42 II $300 ea.
Center Ch. Klipsch RC-42 II $250 ea.
Surrounds Pioneer SP-BS22-LR $126 pair
Subwoofer Klipsch SUB-12HG Synergy Series $299 ea.
Receiver Onkyo TX-NR818 7.2 $699
Total: $1974 (Under budget)
If any money is saved I told him to put it toward the next higher center speaker. What do you think of this system? Anything you would change, or would you go a different route?
His room is open around 14x18. 10ft ceilings. (estimation)
Having just gone through a complete overhaul w/ a similar budget, my suggestion would be to wait until next year. I saved a good amount of cash on everything from the black friday specials. All online purchases btw - tv, avr, 5.1 spkrs
I also skipped over the Onkyo receivers after several hi-fi dealers kept mentioning the hdmi board problems. I went w/ a Marantz 5008 refurb from A4L. Also, given the 818 is a model old, are you actually able to find one?
In terms of speakers, have you looked at emptek? I chose their tower 5.1 setup as the reviews were good and consistent. Plus it's a small company and you skip the middleman, among other benefits.. My backup plan was the bic acoustech.
In the end, I would encourage you to look beyond the staple labels of klipsch, pioneer, and onkyo. Talk to some dealers (ie. AV Science) for some suggestions too. After all, they do this for a living while I'm just pretending. Good luck w/ helping your buddy.
