How do I know whether the signal from HTPC to AVR is "pure?"

How can I determine whether my Windows 8.1 HTPC connected to an AVR via HDMI is doing any "processing" of the audio signal before it send it to my HTPC?

Use wasapi or bitstream the audio.

Google or search "bitstreaming". Then set your HTPC up to bitstream to your AV receiver.

Can you hear a difference? If not, does it matter?

Mrkazador, assassin,

The purpose of my post was to see whether I was successfully bitstreaming to my AVR. How can I tell?

Thanks!

The display on the receiver should show, Dolby Digital, DTS, DTS-HD, and so on...

Thank you Mrkazador. When I play DVDs and Blu-rays through Total Media Theater, my AVR shows DTS-HD, Dolby Digital, etc. So, it would appear I am bitstreaming to my AVR in this situation.

Why I play hi-rez multi-channel FLAC rips of DVD-Audio through Windows Media Center, my receiver shows "Multi-Channel In." What can I make of this? Being bitstreamed?

Thanks!

As far as I know, you can't bitstream FLAC. It needs to be decoded to PCM first which is a lossless conversion. You can use a wasapi audio renderer to make sure Windows doesn't resample the audio.

Also check to make sure your two-channel audio files (including FLAC) are being sent as two channels and not multichannel with the other channels silent. If your receiver can't apply Dolby Prologic or DTS Neo to stereo soundtracks, then they aren't being sent as stereo.
