Magnavox DVR 533H with Tuner - No Channel ADD-ON Search Function Available

Thread Starter

I just bought a Magnavox 533H which has a DVD, HDD and Digital Tuner.  I am using it over the air with a good quality amplified antenna.  (Antenna has worked  great with my HD 42 inch TV for the past year – 48 channels).

My problem is this.  Because I am using an OTA antenna, I have to do multiple auto scans to populate the tuner with all the available channels at my location, while changing the antenna direction after each scan search.  Each time I do a new scan search I Ioose the channels from the previous search.  It doesn’t allow me to do a Channel Add- On Search, which would keep the channels from the previous search.

Does anyone know of any available firmware updates which will solve this problem?

There is nothing on the manufacturer’s website.

No, there's no firmware fix for that kind of issue. If your antenna is outside, what you should do instead of moving the antenna in a different direction, is to add a second fixed antenna pointed in the direction of the second set of stations, and combine that antenna with the first one using a signal combiner into one cable, so that both sets of channels are always available to the DVD recorder. An antenna installation specialist can help you with that kind of installation as you'll want to have antennas made specifically for the channels you're pointing the antennas towards, you may need amplification somewhere in the lines, and the combiner should be such that it rejects stray signals from the antennas which aren't designed to pick up those channels. Sometimes you can get away with using a standard signal splitter in reverse, but it's not ideal for combining antennas.

There are cheap outdoor antennas marketed as "omnidirectional", but they tend to have very low sensitivity, and are generally only useful if you're very close to the transmitters in all directions.

If your antenna is a set top antenna inside, same thing-- you'll need to have a second antenna on top of your set and use the combiner method above, which I think is impractical for indoor use.
