Dorm/desktop setup

So I'm relatively inexperienced with setting up speakers, but I have the desire to get some sort of setup for a dorm room/desktop setup. I have a pretty nice set of samsung home theater speakers (surround sound) that are no longer being used, and I was thinking of trying to wire some of these speakers to a small receiver. The only problem is, I don't have a receiver and I'm not 100% sure on how to get one that would work with these speakers (they are all 8 ohm impedance). Im also not looking to spend a ton of money, but that may not be possible. Can anyone point me in the right direction or to some form of guidance? Sorry in advance for my lack of knowledge.

You should tell us the exact models you have, in case there is something unusual about them.

But you should probably be able to use just about any receiver you want with them.  I would look at surround receivers from brands like Yamaha, Pioneer, Marantz, and Denon.  A low end model is likely all you need.

I've never had a problem buying a receiver/avr from thrift shops - just stick with those above brands - for around $20-50. Just find one that'll let you a) test it out there or b) let you return it if there's a problem with it.

Or you could look at a self powered speaker such as the airmotiv4's by emotiva. The sound quality is astounding!! And you won't need an external amp or avr

They are about 250$ but worth every penny!!

Thanks to all for the advice. I'll definitely look around for a cheap receiver. I don't know the exact brand, but I think they are run of the mill home theater speakers.

Preferably less than $100-150.

Eek that is a miniscule budget.

You might be best starting off with computer speakers. For a dorm/desk set-up. It will have plenty of volume and bass to get a dorm room party going.

Something like the:
Logitech Speaker System Z623
or
Klipsch - ProMedia 2.1 Speaker System

I would look on Craigslist for a used receiver, you should be able to find something from Yamaha/Onkyo/Denon/Pioneer for $50, and then grab a pair of Pioneer BS22, they are a great budget speaker and will sound better than any multi-media system in your budget. Then save up for a sub, maybe something like the Dayton SUB-1000, it's a good budget sub that would be suitable for a smaller space like a dorm. I would avoid using those Samsung speakers, if you want to have a good foundation and be able to build up, this is the way to go. If you post your local Craigslist we can look through for some options.
