55" TV as PC Monitor?

Hey guys,

I will be buying a Panasonic TC-P55VT60 for use as my PC's monitor. I currently have a 42" Plasma TV which it will be replacing. I sit about 3 feet from my 42" TV. How far should I sit from the 55" TV? Do you think it's too big as a PC Monitor?

Thanks.

my two rules of thumb are
1) if you can see the individual pixels youre too close
2) if you have to turn your head to see parts of the screen youre too close

as for how far you should sit? one good rule is to sit twice the screen size away. so at 55 inches you'd want to sit about 9 feet away. not an iron clad rule, but a good way to make sure that you wont see pixels or need to move your head around.

Depends on your need.  For me, 55 is way too big as a dedicated PC monitor.  The max resolution for it is 1080, so you won't get more pixels on the upgrade.  It'll be the same screen, just stretched out to fit 55".  If the large size is to assist with a  vision issue, then you know what you need to see it well.  But for me, more than 24" is too big for 1080.  Beyond 24", I want higher resolution to make use of the extra screen.  I have a 27" with 1440 resolution.

A good guidance is the so called "retina display" resolution of 53 ppd (pixel per digree). For 55" 1080p (40 ppi), the minimum distance to the screen to achieve not less than that is 76". At less than this, an average eye would be able to resolve the pixels (arguably; see discussion in Wikipedia).

I don't care about pittsoccer33's second point: I use my higher res monitors at 90+ deg FOV (30" 1600p from 15"), which does make turning my head necessary. That's the benefit of having more "real estate".

For using a tv for a monitor, I would strongly consider the cheap UHDTVs; just today saw a 50" for $600AR.

I beleive 'twice the screen size away' is rather for TV watching. If being 3ft away from a 42" works for you, then with 55", you need about 4 feet. Our HTPC is connected to a 60" TV, looks great from a couch about 12 ft away, but when using it as a monitor, most comfortable distance is about 5 ft.

Sure, why not. I'm about 4' from a 50" Panasonic LCD and it's great.
