No dogs are required, at least not live ones.
There was some debate about this for a while in the mid 1970's, but I think the passage of time and the judgment of popular culture have now firmly established that the essential ingredients for the perfect C&W song are mama, trains, trucks, prison, and getting drunk.
But if you're as superb a songwriter as the author of "City of New Orleans" and if you are willing to work in the folk genre rather than pure C&W, you can get by with just having a train and some mamas (and perhaps a hint of some of the passengers getting drunk).
As for the Beatles and C&W music, they did a nice job covering "Act Naturally" in 1965, two years after Buck Owens recorded the song.
