MartySub Flatpacks

Hey,

I have seen quite a few people interested in one of the martysub variations . I have had a couple people pm me wondering if I would build one for them. To build the whole thing would take too much of my time and I couldn't charge you enough to make it worthwhile, plus shipping that beast is a pain. I could however put together a flatpack with all the pieces cut, front baffle cutout, etc.

Update

After two months I have built sixteen flatpacks for various people. I will continue to offer this option for people who just don't have the equipment or time to do it on your own. I have enjoyed having this little side business and its fun to let more people enjoy the power of Marty !

Their are three main types of Martysubs (with variations for Full and Minimarty size) which have all been designed by Ltd02 ... Thanks to John

1) Full Marty (Green in graph) 2' by 2' by 4' ~ 17hz tuning in 11cuft box (1100 watts)

2) MiniMarty (Green in graph) 2' by 30" by 36" ~17hz tuning in 10cuft box (1100watts)

MiniMarty (Green in graph) 2' by 2' by 40" ~17hz tuning in 9cuft box (1100watts)

3) Martycube (Black in graph) 2' by 2',by 2' ~20hz tuning in 5 cuft box (1100 watts)

4) Just for fun the blue line in graph is 4cuft sealed sub (1100 watts)

5) Just for wows is the red line which is Martycube with Uxl18 driver (2200 watts)

For the below graph the driver is Dayton Audio RSS460HO-4 18" (except for red) Other drivers have been graphed by Ltd later in the thread.

The only tools you would need to complete the sub with are clamps and a drill.

Pricing is :

1) Marty and Mini Marty...............$250 plus shipping

2) Martycube.................................$200 plus shipping

I would charge exact shipping prices for each person. I would also provide help through email once your building if needed.

Do you want explosions in your house to rip apart your foundation... Ok , maybe just rattle the dishes ! I would not be going lower for my price so don't pm wondering if I would do it for less. I am trying to make some cash so my wife stops wondering how much my home theater is worth and also trying to help out those who want a martysub but don't have access to my woodshop. If you want to order a flatpack then Pm me.

Here are some pics of the Martycube.

Here is an instructional guide to building the Cube

Here's a comparison of full marty vs cube in my room

Alright, the initial results are in. I decided to try to be a bit more technical for my initial impressions. I went to here
http://www.audiocheck.net/audiofrequencysignalgenerator_sinetone.php

and downloaded 15,20,30,40,50,60,70,80,90 hz tones. Then I set the sound level and played them through the full marty (24 by 24 by 48"). Then swapped out driver and played them through martycube at same volume, same everything else settings, in the exact same sub placement in the room

Here are the numbers

15hz full marty +5 dbs

20 hz full marty +3.5

30hz full marty +2

40hz full marty +0.8

50hz Cube +1.2

60hz Cube +2.2

70hz Even

80hz Even

90hz Even

The cube did pretty close to what Ltd02 graphed. To me very impressive. I then did a couple of other tests. I gave the cube 2dbs eq from the inuke3000dsp at 20hz. It pulled the cube to around 1db down at 20hz. The other test was a loud blast of 50hz at reference +2 level. THe full marty did 116dbs and the cube 117.5dbs. No chuffing or noises.

Some pics

And here are pics of the flatpack when it arrives to you

Hey Chaluga,

I'd be interested in one. I'm in the middle of building one similar to atabea's build, and it's been taking me forever since I have no table saw, and I've been building it inside my garage because it's frigging cold outside (fellow Canuck in st. Thomas Ontario). This is definitely a great option for people with limited time and skills like myself
I ordered 2 UXL 18s from the group buy, so they need good homes once they arrive. My shipping address is N5R 0B8, how much would that be approximately? Your price is fair and your cause is noble

Ah Huh! so I wasn’t that far off when I posted this yesterday.

I plugged the numbers in Canada Post and their limit is 66 pounds. I don't know exactly how much the flatpack will weigh. I will have my martysub pieces cut Tuesday and I will weigh them to get a more precise weight. With fedex Canada its roughly a dollar per pound. 60 pounds would be 60 bucks to ship to you.

seems like a great idea. that works out to about 9 cubic feet net and about a 16hz tuning? i forget exactly what we discussed.

the form factor of atabea's could be another good choice for folks:

http://www.avsforum.com/t/1496365/another-ltd02-designed-sub-build/0_50

all fits on two sheets as we discussed here:

mdf would seem to save a lot of money vs. birch, but that's your call of course.

I'm not sure if erich offers just the baffles w/ cutouts, but that is one sticking point for folks with the martysub. maybe something like that could be another option.

I'm really tempted, but I just finished assembling my second 4cu ft flat pack for my second UXL-18. I don't have enough funds for all of the things I want to do.

Is this a limited time offer, or will you be doing this for the foreseeable future? What if I am interested 6 months from now?

By the way, do you have WinISP plots for some of the more common drivers that might be used in this? UXL-18, Dayton 18HO, Ultimax-18, and SI 18? It might help convince people.

I am not sure the interest but I see offering this until I can buy all the speakers I need. I would think 4-6 months but who knows. I do want the oppo 103d as well.

Yup I think 80-90 lbs , but we will see.

I'm guessing even more than that. The 8cuft dual opposed is basically 100lbs. Granted you will be a little lighter with plywood, but you've got a whole extra panel for the slot port, and a 30% bigger box.

Chalugadp,

I had expressed interest in flatpacks on another thread awhile back. But I could not wait any longer, so I started building my own. Just wanted to let you know I no longer have interest. It is a great idea though, and I wish you luck. The front baffles alone are worth it. Takes time and a few practice cuts for someone without the shop and tools you have to cut those precisely...

Isn't that mdf ? My full-size marty I already built was 140 lbs with 40 pound driver. I just moved 14 sheets of plywood last night (thanks jbrown
)

I shipped my hsu vtf15 118lbs in a huge box and it was only 100 bucks shipping with fedex. I will put the wood on a scale Tuesday and take a pic. Over under is 95 lbs and I get the under ... I'll give you the over Erich.

Personally, I could handle the bracing myself using 1x3 pine....so excluding the bracing, that may get the shipping weight a little lower by maybe 10lbs? Just a thought....might not work for everyone though

Can ship without bracing and deduct cost saved in shipping . Overall pricing still 250 cuz I would make parts in bulk so not less time in cutting for me.

Forgot about them . Remember when you were a kid and rode the bus with greyhound

No problem....it may not make much of a difference shipping wise. If it could get light enough to ship via canada post, it may be worth it....but I'm guessing not on second thought

If/when you want to give it a go, pm me with all the particulars. I'm off to watch Avatar with my kids. Haven't watched it since I built martysub and my lcr speakers.

I am not sure about the birch plywood you get in the states. I can get birch plywood for $30 bucks a sheet in Canada and its quality plywood. That's cheaper then mdf here. You can ask Jbrown about the quality since he just bought 14 sheets last night. Its not baltic birch but its strong, well made, consistent in size and nice face grain.

#26 ·
The birch plywood that chalugadp has mentioned is excellent quality. To give you a bit of an idea I tried sourcing from a specialty plywood shop and they had a nice C+ grade 13ply plywood, I went to another place and was able to find an even nicer plywood with almost no voids in it for $30 a sheet when its on sale! I went to four different places and I would have to say that without a doubt this plywood was the nicest stuff next to a $85 per sheet 3/4" 18ply Baltic birch.

Between MDF and the birch plywood chalugadp is talking about; I think you'd be crazy to pick MDF.
