Order went thru for 2x D4s. You guys are killin' me. Oh well, if I run out of money I can always make Headphones out of them haha. Like Data-Bass said - It would work well as a Woofer in a 3-way crossed over @ 350-400Hz.

It will depend on your room and your mains. I like 48db butterworth , but play around with a few and see what you like.

Hardware .... not sure what you mean.

12db butterworth aka second order is fine in most cases.

what some folks do is center that one right on the tuning frequency of the cab, then put another filter of 2-3db of equalization on to bring spl back up a hair right around the tuning frequency. this is usually ok because the driver isn't moving very much right around there (so long as power output is kept reasonable, ported cabs hit max power right on the cab's tuning frequency).

Ok I have watched parts of five movies and listened to music for about three hours. These observations are subjective but since the cube is working under the same setup as full marty and in virtually the same location, at the same volume level (-5 from reference for movies, -15 to -20 for music). I am going to use a little of the flowery language so don't beat me up. For music I really prefer the cube. It seems to handle difficult passages of music with tighter smoother bass. For example Black Eyed Peas Missing you is a song with lots of different octaves mixing together. While I was listening to that song I ended up toe tapping and closing my eyes and just grooving to the beat. I don't do that very often. Midbass is definitely punchier with the kick drum being felt more in your chest.

The dampening I used for both was the same amount, plywood the same, both heavily braced. For movies gunshots, punches, swords slamming into walls is better with the cube. Their is the drop off of the lowest bass which I can hear as well.

20hz to about 28hz is definitely better with full marty. I think the second cube with the uxl18 driver will take care of that weakness. My room is 3000sqft in size. overall I am very happy. When my second cube is hooked up i will give you more impressions.

On a side note I really enjoyed our build night with Jbrown and Warren. It was cool to talk speaker stuff with someone who really cares about it. Friends and the wife just nod their head when I am telling them about my system. Going to get about 5 sheets of mdf on monday.

This will be my first build. Didn't know if I needed a xover, feet, what wire connections you recommend, etc. Just making sure I am covering all my bases.

wink.gif You mean 3000 cubic feet? 3000sqft is bigger than my house!
Sounds like just what the Dr ordered!!!

Best thing to do is post a build thread and then you get answers from several sources. I'm only a midlevel guy here. Don't have the knowledge of the big boys. I'm using inuke3000 dsp amp , speakon cables from monoprice , dampening from pe.

That is soooo good to hear. I just love tight, articulate bass. Just curious; will you be keeping your full marty in the mix or will you be retiring it?

Sorry for my ignorance here but do subs need a crossover? Or is it simply wire the sub to the speakon input and you are done?

Lol... I know you'd probably rather be spending your time doing something else on a Thursday night then help with building my sub, but it was enjoyable at the same time because like you said its fun to shoot the sh*t with people that have the same interest in this hobby. All my buddies just think I'm crazy...lol

Let me know if you want some help on Monday cutting up that MDF, I'm free after 4:30.

Yes subs need xover. The inuke3000dsp does that for you. Sounds like you would benefit from reading this

Some good info to get you started.

Will be ok next week.. will need some help the week after.

Something to think about is the possibility of you building two monster subs and two cubes. That way you would have great low bass and great midbass . Best of both. cool.gif

You think the cube will have more mid bass then the boxes I'm building? I don't remember what the graph was show for the cube from 50-100hz.

Here's the graph for the cabinet we just build for my sub.

Thanks for the link. I will read up on this. On my initial search through there I didn't see a step by step of how to build a sub. Does anyone know of a step by step play book of building a sub? What you need, diagrams, etc. ? Sorry for the noob questions.

Your box is basically the same as full marty. Same cuft. On Ltd's graph cube has couple more dbs then full marty in 50-70 range. That's how my measurements were. I think from 15-30z bigger box is better. 50-70hz cube is better . Why not have best of both. Either way you can't go wrong

I will be creating a build booklet for the martycube . Be doing it probably next weekend .

Just search build threads on here , spend an hour reading a few and you will get up to speed

Green is your box , black the cube. This is with si18 driver. Uxl18 would be I am assuming equally higher for both. Red line is uxl18 in cube.

The green graph on this is different then the one John gave me for the build on my cabinets.
yours is tuned a little lower and uses the uxl driver so the response is a little different.
At 20hz, the uxl-18 driver should have a 5db gain over the SI driver in the Marty cube!!! The uxl-18 will be a monster in the Marty cube as you will get a little more extension as well as way higher spl!! Many thanks to ltd02 for this great design...
From looking at those graphs the cube will only have about 1-1.5dB more mid bass then my cabinet and from about 80hz and up the are the same. But down low my cabinet has a pretty good advantage over the cube. I'm building my setup for movies so I think I'll just stick to the original plan of four large cabinets.

If his is tuned a little lower then wouldn't he be giving up a little in the 40-70hz range to gain in the 15-25hz ? Not sure just asking ... Still have lots to learn for me. smile.gif

I will be able to compare once I get my driver from Mark. Plan on having the 2nd cube box done by Wednesday. Then have to start building for others cool.gif

Both cubes , one with uxl18 and one with si18 . Can't at this point spend another 400 for another uxl. Want to upgrade my mains , and get a oppo. Eventually might replace si18 with another uxl18 if needed.

I am going off your word and went with the SI 18s. I want my subs to be matched so I ordered 2. Seemed like a great price. I got 2 subs, and will get an amp for less than a vtf15 that I was originally looking at!!! Oh and why isn't this the donnycube? We haven't heard from martycool in a while. Guess he is too busy enjoying his creation....

Your two subs will demolish the hsu. By about 6-12 dbs depending upon hz. Should be named johnnycube ! biggrin.gif
