Small TBI Magellan Subwoofer Magic

Howdy....I'm pretty much astounded by what this small sub can do. Ever since I went to a 10' wide screen in my HT I've wanted to get smaller footprint subs but the pair of DIY's I had ( Dual 12" drivers in each, built by a mad speaker builder friend of mine) were just too good plus I didn't want to spend a ton of money.

I had seen TBI Magellan VIII SU demo units on ebay for a good price and their size was perfect. Not a lot of reviews but what there are are glowing. I came across a MAGELLAN VIP su, the P is for powered, on ebay for an excellent price. The original owner had purchased a pair but realized 2 was overkill. This thing has only one 6" driver and is tiny. I am amazed at what it can do. My large diy's are gone and will not be missed. The VIP su is about 71/4" tall with included spikes and 5 1/2 without. Original owner didn't us spikes as he said the cabinet is so inert they aren't needed.

They are sold direct from http://www.tbisound.com/dsp_products_subwoofers.asp

You can usually find a demo MAGELLAN VIII su unit on ebay .

As one reviewer said, I'll never use any other subwoofer.

Sorry I will only believe it when I hear it.

The MAGELLAN VIII su is a passive sub with an 8" driver that has a "POWER HANDLING" of "150 W RMS". The one on eBay is priced at $575. That's funny. smile.gif

+1. Small, goes low, has good sensitivity. You can have any two, but not all three. With a box that size and only 120w powering it no way does it go loud and low. One or the other, but not both.

To the OP: got any graphs?

There are some graphs on the website that link takes you to. Whether they are the graphs you are looking for -- I don't know.

Now, I'm no expert, but...

... don't these graphs look a bit weird?

How can you have a negative group delay value?

I'm also not sure how the webpage blurb can say "the absolutely constant loading of the driver cone at all frequencies ... allow(s) our MAGELLAN VIII su to perform to 10Hz at full power input."

when the info lines below it say "FREQUENCY RESPONSE 12 Hz – 160 Hz (–6db)"

and the PDF brochure says "FREQUENCY RESPONSE 15Hz to 125Hz -6db (graphs are available)"

and the top graph shows it dropping off a cliff below 30Hz and it seems to indicate it's -17.5dB @ 16.07Hz?

Perhaps I'm reading it wrong but something smells funny to me...

That's what it shows, and it's what one can actually expect from a box of that size. The impedance chart also shows that -6dB to 12Hz is a fantasy spec. rolleyes.gif

Hate to be "that guy", but I didn't bother even looking at them after I read a line or two on the site. Just pointing out that there were graphs available.
