To anyone looking, I got a TiVo Roamio Basic with the 4 OTA tuners. Seems to work well, added a 1TB My DVR Expander AV, and the OTA tuner is picking up Fox in my living room when my tv and Dish Hopper wont.

Really strange... I just have AT&T U-verse TV and I got WPAN right? WPAN doesn't show up since we got AT&T...

If y'all have DirecTV, did you have the same thing still?

We still have WPAN. The programming doesn't match up with what the guide says, and I've never seen a legal ID of any kind, but it appears to still be on the air. I just checked at midnight to see if they did any kind of ID and all I got was this silent still picture for a few seconds:

WPAN-DT 53 uh, ID?

What kind of cockamamie operation is this? rolleyes.gif

What is the intended or correct virtual channel for WDPM? The Wikipedia article notes they used to show up on 4.1. I recently did a re-scan and have the channel listed as 18.1. I do not remember seeing that designation before.
There is probably more than one "correct" value, depending on how you read the rules, but there are definite "wrong" values, including 4.1 which would be very wrong.

18.1 or 31.1 would be correct.

It's been 18.1 for at least a few months now from what I can recall. Still weak as all get-out here in Foley, too. I have a hard time believing they are running their full authorized power.

How is reception for everyone on WKRG?

I almost always get periodic pixelization/macroblocking spread throughout their signal. The frequency of the problem varies from time to time. I receive these artifacts ota, even though I am just a few miles from the station, as well as through Mediacom on cable. I think Mediacom is simply picking up their signal over the air, and does not have a direct feed.

I did not have the problem with directv, but I know they get a direct feed from the station.

CBS's HD broadcasts of sporting events is often a pixelization nightmare, so it is hard to separate one problem from the other.

Do others who get WKRG ota or on cable have the same issues?
Its bad, and IMO its because of all the sub channels robbing bandwidth. Look at the crowd during a football game, its horrible.
Dang. I had a big long reply typed out on Tapatalk on my phone and the forum ate it. So this will be much shorter.

I also see the hiccup/pixelization issue when watching WKRG off the air, but only on 5.1. It doesn't affect the weather radar or MeTV. IMHO I think this is an encoder issue or bug and that the engineer at WKRG either doesn't know about it or doesn't know how/can't afford to fix it. I'm also thinking that they must have a really old encoder setup since it seems to do such a poor job with subchannels. The macroblocking on MeTV is so bad that sometimes during episodes of The Rockford Files and The Rifleman I've seen the MeTV logo completely disappear during action sequences!

I've seen other channels in other markets with a similar channel-load as WKRG that don't look nearly this bad. And if you compare it to WSRE which has three SD subchannels, they look about the same as WKRG despite passing through more content.

The last issue is I've also noticed, and again this is just personal opinion, that CBS' HD feed is the worst in the entire industry. I've never seen college football look good on their network.
My experience, unfortunately, has been the same with the network college game signal, whether watching off directv, ota, or on Mediacom.

Hopefully the local broadcasting issues can be addressed and remedied.

WPMI has appeared to have fixed their horrific audio quality. I'm watching Nightly News now, and the audio is as clear as a bell. It's been compressed ever since they upgraded to HD for programming about two years ago. Meanwhile, WJTC has been without the same issue WPMI had.

That's fantastic news. I've complained numerous times since the HD upgrade and never got anyone to acknowledge a problem. The last time I said something was on the survey they've been asking people to take each day on the news… Maybe that did the trick. Either that or Sinclair brought in a more competent engineer. wink.gif

...and the audio sucks again....oh well!
I did notice that 15.2 is now in 16x9...and the local segments are in 16x9 as well. To do this, the existing graphics have been stretched to fill the screen, including the weather graphics used in between local segments.

CBS actually looked pretty good OTA for the game yesterday.

I would agree. I have certainly seen much worse.
Yeah, it did not completely fall apart in crowd shots and on the field looked pretty sharp.

WPMI 15.2 is now a localized version of WeatherNation...with local weather info and cut-ins. It's in 480i 16x9 .

Ahhh crap. frown.gif

Yea, it sounds pretty bad again. I just checked the OTA signal so I could take a gander at 15.2 and it sounds like crap. I fired off another message to their Facebook page but I seriously doubt it'll do any good since I never got a response last time. Maybe it's time to look up the chain to Sinclar's main engineering team, if they even have one.

WeatherNation looks and sounds passable, but for some reason my TV refuses to show it in the correct aspect ratio without forcing it, which then makes all the other SD channels come out in stretch-o-vision. Are they not sending the widescreen flag? It could just be this TV since it's a cheapie from Sam's Club.

I see now whoever owns WKRG is fighting with Dish, Im really tiring of Dish and their disputes because they have not been able to keep the prices down like the claim. Then there is the chance we might lose Disney and ESPN channels after 9/30...
Sheesh! Quit whinin'!

Would you prefer that Dish simply says at contract renewal time " Hey, no problem! Just send us the new bill and we'll just pass it on to the Dish subscribers. They don't care about what it costs, they just don't want to miss programming, no matter what it costs."
Whinin? No whining there, what are you a fanboy? News Flash! Dish's prices arent great.

Have you kept up lately? Dish's prices and fees are no better than anyone else. they still don't have ESPNU in HD either. They dont work it out by the 30th or pull ESPN, Ill be back at Directv who is obviously a better run organization. The only thing Dish has on Directv is a better DVR, but I pay for channels.

Lets see how folks around here like it when they can't watch their Saturday SEC game.

Nah, not a fan boy at all. In fact, I happen to be a D* customer and an antenna user.

I just get tired of people whining about the consequences of the retransmission contract negotiations and who blame them on the cable and satellite carriers as you have. In fact, it's the stations and their ownership groups that are the ones precipitating the service interruptions since the MVCs are not permitted to retransmit content without permission which, without a contractual agreement, will not be provided.

The only way to completely avoid that contractual battle would be as I previously suggested.
I just dont blame them on cable operators, I hold both sides accountable. And you seem to classify a valid beef as "whining" which I dont agree with either

My beef is that Dish has more than its fair share, and part of that is due to the fact they seem to go out of their way to irritate certain groups, let not even get on lawsuits. I realize Directv can have issues, but they have always seemed to have better working relationships, something Dish is not good at.

All that being said, its moot, I have a Genie and Mini Genie install setup for Saturday morning. Good bye Dish, hello again Directv.

TiVo Roamio has OTA covered, so I dont care who has a dispute with one another, as long as its not ESPN or Fox Sports. There I have more faith in Directv.

How many of you guys switched to AT&T U-Verse?
Dont have it in my area. A friend does on Daphne, but never really messed with it.
