If you don't have bass shakers-GET THEM!!!  

I have wanted to get these for a while but it has been a tough sell to the wife.

My wife thought I was nuts when I bought some of these. Now she likes to show them off to anyone who comes over.

Will these do the same as a real nice sub sitting in a corner next to your seating? I'm going to be ordering the new SVS PC-Plus 20-39 eventually and have thought about shakers too. My Klipsch KSW-150 (or whatever it is) sub does a good job shaking the couches at times, so I'm guessing the 20-39 would be even better... ? Do the shakers really add that much more over a hot sub?

How do you guys mount these bass shakers? I have the Berkline's and the Aura Pro Bass shakers with mono amps ready to hook them up with... I've been told to just strap them under the cushion on the Berkline's but the instructions on the bass shakers say to put them on something firm. Not sure where there is room under or on the Berkline's to mount them on? I'm not sure if I want to put them directly on the bottom or back cushion... I guess I wouldn't want any "localized" shaking, or else it might feel like those Shiatsu Massage chairs...

Any suggestions? I do not have a riser, but wish to put a bass shaker on per chair so that I can turn the mono-amp on/off independently as desired.

Don't forget to have a box full of cash ready when the *man* drops in to hand you a disturbing the peace fine. I had a great set up wth twin powered 500 watt sub woofers and 16 inch Pioneer woofes and a ribbon tweeter. My last pinch was in 1994 3rd one cost me $125.


I now use the 5 sounds into headhones which paid for itself over and over and over, I use AHD-750 Denons with 30 Ohm low impedance. No more calls from the man and no more having to add to comunity chest.

I have two SVS 16-46CS subs. They put out serious bass BUT must be turned up past "spouse approved listening levels" or SALL(tm) to shake the main viewing couch.

I have two Aura bass shakers attached to the main viewing couch. They enhance the experience at any volume including SALL(tm).

I only have one SVS 16-46CS, and the shakers do add to the experience. I have one in each of my recliners (sorry jinhopark, non-berklines) mounted to a 2x6 that is screwed to the chair's frame. When listening at low-levels, the shakers really add to the sound. I want to add some to the seating platform soon, I like to sit there also, but miss the shake.

I love them, they really augment the bass. I attached a pair of Aura's to the bottom of my couch and put a 50 hz inline filter on them. Shake, Rattle & Roll!!

Oh, and if you need to turn down the LFE late at night you can just turn off the sub and still get the effect with the shakers.

You would definetly have to mount them to something firm. I wouldnt worry about a 'localized' effect- I have a bunch hooked up to my movie-watching chair, and it shakes the crap out of the whole thing!

Maybe you could mount them inside of the frame, or underneath like I did:

Do you have to buy an external amp for bass shakers?
When you bolt them to the bottm of a chair or couch how does that affect the performance of the rattling affect? I mean doesn't it just shake the bottom of the couch under your butt or does it vibrate the whole couch or chair evenly?

These babies violate the laws of physics. They shake the living hell out of a chair and occupant weighing from 200 pounds up, But guess what? No seperate amp is needed. No need to power these babies so they can do that work. Just feed them off the line level LFE output of your 80 watt per SS receiver. :)

Yes, you need a powereful external amp. Doesn't have to be expensive though. A couple of hundred watt used Hafler will work fine as well as many others.

DJ Amps will work very well as you are not as concerned about true audiophile quality when they are connected to a pair of Bass Shakers as when they are hooked to your finest loudspeakers .

How tall is the riser you are building?
Are you building the riser for additional seating?

As far as Bassshakers are concerned, will old subwoofer amps do the trick?

Someone wants to give me two Buttkickers but I don't how to place them. I have 2 rows of 4 chairs each, 1st row on concrete, 2nd on 10" riser. How should they be mounted?

Yes , the riser is for additional seating BUT only as a temporary inclusion . My HT room is not dedicated and hence is required to be a family room now and again . I'm aiming for an 8" platform that I can bring into the room from the basement and then return there once my company leaves .I have individual chairs in the room already and will only have to place them on the riser when company arrives .

The problem so far has been to construct something light and transportable that will "hang" or at least get out of the way while in the basement . I think I've got a working idea but Mom's the word until I can locate the materials .

I don't believe that bass shackers will be powerfull enough for a riser with two or more viewers seated on it. Although they are considerable more expensive, the buttkicker is the way to go for a platform/riser configuration. My riser has three theater seats quick release bolted to the riser and one buttkicker for the whole thing and it works great. I have attached six rubber pegs to the underside of the platform allowing it to "float" freely over the carpet. You can find the pegs in Granger under isolator mounts. There is a considerable amount of info on buttkickers in the audio forum. Randy

Im using 2 buttkickers powered by a Tsunami amp. I built a platform under the seats. Everyone who sits and watches movies loves the buttkickers. They really shake!

Yes! In fact, I actually bought a cheap sub-woofer off UBID for about $50.00. I unhooked the speaker and hooked two bass shakers up in series since they're 4 ohm. Works great, and it has the auto on/off feature that most subs have, plus the variable crossover which is useful for filtering higher frequencies.

BTW: I love Bass Shakers! Adds a lot to the experience.

Risers are the preferred install method according to the Aura installation guide. I have a pair attached to a 3 person sofa and it can produce much more vibration than is realistic if I crank it up. I leave it set at about 6 (out of a 10) and that is just about right, any higher and I'd probably lose some fillings.

I just ordered 2 sets of bass shakers!
I am going to use old sub amps to power them.
Cant wait to see what it's like to use them.

I agree 100% with you Wayne. I am going to start them somewhere in the middle and back them off just enough to *enhance* my HT and Music. I am extremely picky when it comes to sound. I don't like my subs tuned up too high or low. I don't mess with the treble and bass adjustments ( I leave them at default settings ). I calibrate my setup (both audio and video) so it all intergrates seamlessly.
