Memphis, TN - HDTV - Page 10

About the only thing that will help you guys with a freezing up picture is an outdoor antenna with a rotator. If you go that route, you'll probably be ok. I never thought an indoor antenna will work well with HD. Time Warner needs to get off their ass and start delivering the HD channels to their customers too.

I tried to do a search on Monday night and lost the 28-1 and 2 channels. After more searching I still can't get them back. When I put in 28-1 it goes to 3-1.

About ABC, I know Miracles Monday night was in 720, but it didn't look near as good as the Oscars. But the other shows on ABC, when I'm home, don't look like they are in HD at all. I've even started watching Reba but it looks the same as it does on DirecTV.

Has anyone noticed that the sound goes in lower on the digital channels? Is it supposed to be this way?

In regards to the Oscar comment, live with digital cameras is crisper and sharper looking than anything else. I think some shows are fuzzy because the producer wants them that way.

You see live shots then move to film the live always smokes the film/tape...

I've too have always noticed the sound is lower on digital channels.

It's Dolby Digital so it is around 10db lower. This gives it more headroom for explosions, etc. I notice the same thing when I switch from a DD show on Starz to a non DD show on DirecTV.

MX,

28-1 is 3-1.........this has to do with "virtual channels", the actual channel, and the channel remapping in the STB. I dont know for sure if the channel remapping for the virtual channels is supplied by the broadcaster or is coming through D* for now. When everything works like it should, the broadcasters transmit the channel remapping info along with program guide data.

Right now the 2 stiations that are multicasting ABC and CBS, the -2 sub channels have no remap info, so they dont go back to 24-2 or 3-2, although they are the same thing.

Yes the sound of the ATSC channels will be lower, this is due to the DD compression.

HD Video is the alsolute best in PQ right now. That is why live shots of the oscars for examlpe look so good. Another example is HDNet, which is mainly shot on HD Video.

While film based sources look good when telecined to HD, they often carry the "graininess" of the original film stock. Most movies are on film.

Although I dont know this pertains to ATSC, but NTSC PQ was much better with a live feed than a taped one. I dont know if this will affect HD, because HD video is capable of 1920x1080p, I dont know if any thing right now will surpass that.

looks to me like TWC channel 803 has already been allocated to WREG-DT. Also channel 800 says 'TWC and WREG invite you to watch the NCAA Men's BBall Tourney in HD Sat 5 and 7:30 PM, Monday 8PM.'

I just started punching in 800 channels... Who knows what I will come upon next...

We will see. It's Sat, April 5, 3:11 PM now. 803 is up and running in SD. We will see if they will show the final four and final on 800 or 803. Probably 800...

Happy HD-ing,
Radu

Well did they?
Did anyone else hear any popping noises during the game last night? Even in the commericals. The picture last night looked better than the other HD games. The game flow didn't produce much pixelation.

Who at WREG could we contact to see if they can get that fixed?
yes, TWC had the games in HD on channel 803. Yes, sound probelms.

Did anyone else see the game(s) on TWC? I tried really hard to see a diff between OTA and cable. OTA (Zenith 420) seems a very, very little bit clearer, but maybe I was wanting to make myself believe that, in order to keep the Zenith for the NBA finals, and next season's Monday Night Football, and so on (as far as I know, besides WREG-DT, nothing local HD is even close to being carried by TWC...).

I'm getting giddy! If tonight's lineup shows up on 803, I'll be a happy camper. That likely means it's there to stay... also means we'll get the Masters on TWC.
Doh! My HD cable box has been disabled. Can anyone tell me if channel 803 is running tonight's CBS lineup in HD? 'My Big Fat Greek Wedding' is supposed to be on now... thanks
post #282 of 6015
Yes, so far Greek, Becker and 9 Yards are broadcast in HD. There were too many dropouts to enjoy the full effect. The picture was great when it wasn't messed up.

I have a question for memphis area OTA HD viewers. I have a close friend that is ready to make the jump to HD, starting from scratch. He's in mid-Collierville. Are there any HD viewers on the forum from Collierville or East Germantown? Is OTA HD reception acceptable there, and if so, with what antenna set up. Does a standard 4228 on a rotator do the job? Thanks

A 4228 would be overkill for Collierville. I'm about 10 to 15 miles further away from the antenna farm and get decent reception (a few drop-outs) with a Radio Shack DBT sitting on my TV.

Wow.... nice picture on 803 tonight. Audio was in sync as well. I'm very happy and hope it continues...
Glad to see TWC finally adding another channel also....
picture quality of the game was better for me on t-151.
I've been reading on another post that some local affiliates aren't going to carry the HD broadcast on CBS as well as on USA. Does anyone know if CBS will also carry coverage in addition to the USA feed?

Anyone at CBS we can contact about this?
i have two hd receivers: Sony HD200 maps CBS on 3-1 but says no signal;
RCA DTC 100 maps CBS on 28-1 but weak signal. I am confused.
They are both CBS, WREG. WREG is channel 3, but the digital channel is 28. If you are trying to get a good signal, wait until after 7 to see what kind of signals you get. Thats when the prime time shows are on and pretty all the digital feeds are being sent, except FOX of course. During the week, not too much is broadcast digitally during the day.
On my E86, if I type in 28-1, it defaults me to 3-1.
Man, tonight is the first night I sat down and watched an HD broadcast while the subchannel is running. JAG's picture quality sucks. They're taking a beautiful 1080i signal and downrezzing it to what looks like 480p. If we don't start raising cain about this now I guess we'll just need to get used to it....

I'll be sending them an email this evening.
Does anyone have a list of people to email for questions for each station?

A 4228 does an excellent job 30+ miles from the transmitter. You might use one at lesser distance by installing an adjustable attentuator.
Thanks rlj5242 and wc7...my 4228 works great in Lakeland (in the attic on a rotator) without any over saturation. I'd rather have one of those and use an attenuator if necessary, rather than not gather enough signal. Seems Collierville offers no particular reception problems.

Does anyone know if WREG is going to air the Masters in HD Thurs & Fri???
D** satellite says it will be on April 10 & 11, from 4:00 p.m. - 6:30 p.m. (ET) on channel 198. Can't find any info about WREG programming.

CBS is showing the Masters from their HD feed, separate to their normal daily programming. Its up to the local CBS stations to decide whether to pick up the feed or not. This is in addition to the USA showing and normal programs on WREG. So there could be the normal daily shows on 3 but then the Masters on 3-1.
Channel 801 on TWC (USA-HD) will carry the Thursday & Friday rounds of The Masters. Channel 803 (CBS-HD) will carry the Saturday and Sunday rounds.
