Is this player Macro free over the component outputs? Im trying to find a good player that I know will not cause the screen flicker Im getting which everyone Ive asked says is the fault of Macrovision.

Thanks!!!

First thing to note is the detachable power cable, so you can use any standard PC / kettle cable etc.

I got two manuals for some reason. A couple of SACDs were also thrown in, as well as a cheapy SCART and some cheapy cabling.

The remote looks nice - first impressions on the appearance of the 963SA - looks fine, bit understated, not sure how the silver will go with my gold...

More to follow....

puddleduck,

Quick off topic questions:

Where do you live? I see you have the gold Denon receiver, I am trying to find those in the US. Also, what piece of equipment is under your receiver?

Thanks,
leo

puddleduck, thank you for the pictures! As i didn't receive my player today (as pteittinen already told the situation), i'm very interested to see any pictures you might have. Any change to open the player and taking few pictures from the components?
Yes, some pics of the player's insides would be nice!

I'll be posting some pics of the components tomorrow anyway, though.

Might open it up, will need some beers for some courage first :) Not sure I'm brave enough though...!!

leobag - I live in Cambridge, England. The piece of kit you refer to is a REL Q50 subwoofer. The AMP is a Denon 3801.

BTW its definately multi-region out-of-the-box. I just played Red Dwarf (R2) followed by The Others (R1).

Gonna try SACD now, can't do much with picture quality until my AE-300 projector arrives (tomorrow, fingers crossed)

Leo,

Only way you'll get a Gold receiver, or DVD player, from Denon is if you import it from Europe (and then get a REALLY good step-up transfomer). No way you'll find it in the US, quite simply because they don't make them in Gold for the US market.

Best regards,

Afonso.

WARNING: SEVERELY OFF-TOPIC!

Puddleduck,

"Dutch courage"? Are you implying that the Dutch only get courageous when they're drunk and/or drink beer? Hum? ARE YOU?

:D

Just kidding.

Anyway, please refrain from using one of those annoying English expressions containing "Dutch", like "Double Dutch" or "Going Dutch", or "Dutch courage". The "Dutch" word already insulting enough - after all, "Dutch" comes from the German "Deutsch", which means "German", and was initially used by not-so-intelligent English sailors that thought the people of The Netherlands were German. Would you like it that in our language the word for "English" was "Irechen", hum? :)

So, since we're being confused with those German guys next door everytime somebody uses the word "Dutch", don't double the insult! :D

(sorry for the off-topic, but I couldn't resist!!!)

Best regards,

Afonso.

Got my player from Soundform today as well. :D

A few hours later I got the mail below from them. Have been looking for my runaway cat all day so I haven't even hooked it up yet, but will do soon. Cat still missing tho. :(

Dear Jonas,

Did you get your package today, as expected? We were just wondering... If you did you’ll be the very first in the whole world to get it from us…

Best regards,

Soundform Sales.
If I really was first I don't know, but it feels nice to have it here!

OK, well it looks like its PAL-P out of the box too, with an option of outputting @ 480p or "unprocessed" which I guess means 576p for PAL users :)

Bit underwhelmed by SACD so far, the demo disks don't really help though...!
To those who did the Pal PS-hack: After the first "play", do the "------" appear in the display of the player before you could enter the code? PLEASE HELP:( I disconnected already the scart-plug because Lelapin had a problem doing the hack when it was connected.
I'd be curious to know how it handles subtitles as some players seem to have problems with them. Any info is appreciated.
The player finally arrived to Sweden:

PAL progressive and multi-region out of the box.

Price:~629 Euro.

Puddleduck:

Any way you can test it to see if its Macro free?
One way I can check whether Macrovision is on with my Seleco CRT:

Play a DVD which has an anamorphic 1.77:1 picture, i.e. full-frame on a 16:9 TV. If the Macrovision is on, top of the screen (approx. 25 lines' worth) skew quite violently to the right.

That's going to be the first test I'll run on the 963SA when I finally get it.

I know of at least a dozen people waiting for this player in anticipation. What is the greatest concern and interest to us is not the video playback but the audio part of the player. Do to the upsampling of the redbook CD playback its rumored from some exclusive demo presentations in the US that it is superior and on pair with other high end CD players. Its SACD playback should be equally impressive. Can someone comment some more on this? I myself am holding back purchasing the Music Hall MMF25 CD player hoping this will be equally as good in upsampled CD playback with the added bonus of SACD and DVD playback.

The anticipation is overwhelming :p

Thanks for any info on this.

Got it! You have to press "play" and "159". After that appear the "-----" and you can enter the rest of the codes:D

chrisexv6 - which output? I can see if I can record via SCART to a VHS if thats any help? Can't do anything with component just yet.

General impressions - VERY GOOD! The unit makes a good fist of playing MP3 CD's although navigation / flitting between tracks is a bit slow.

The unit is VERY good at playing back standard CDs. Compared to my Pioneer 737 which the 963SA replaces, its leaps and bounds ahead, and is also better than a Marantz 6000 OSE LE I owned for a brief period.

Stereo imaging is sooooo good I have to keep checking sound isn't coming out of my centre speaker - exceptional performance for a CD player (for a DVD player) IMHO.

puddleduck

Thanks for your audio playback info. Glad you like it this much. Is the upsampling for CD playback always on or can you switch it on and off? And if yes, then was it on when you plaid the CDs?
dariusf - yes, I'm using upsampling at the moment, and you can turn it off if you don't want it.
sorry to sound like such a newbie... but what is unsampling and 'redbook' playback?

Also, how is the build/construction of the unit? Is it heavy? Plasticy?

THanks,
Leo
Im interested in the component outs, but you can check it via any output you're able to (one would assume that if its disabled on composite it would be everywhere else too).

Thanks!!!

How is the video performance. Do you see a noticable improvement over the 737?
leobag - I'll pass your first question onto people who know more about this than me :)

Also, how is the build/construction of the unit? Is it heavy? Plasticy?

Its not that solid, and its pretty light. "Plasticy" would describe it well!

This is one area it doesn't compare well to the Pioneer 737 its replacing. Doesn't feel as "solid" somehow, but as its stomping it for performance, guess it doesn't matter...?
keyser - not at the moment, but I'm only on a 28" screen.

I'll know more when my projector arrives tomorrow :)

I'll do a side by side comparision of the 737 in NTSC progressive vs the 932AS in NTSC progressive. (the 737 won't do PAL progressive)
chrisexv - MACRO seems to be OFF on composite :)

I ran a composite cable into the VIDEO IN socket of my VCR then set my VCR to AUX in and I got a steady picture through the VCR with no flashes or rolling.
strike the above post - MACROVISION IS NOT DISABLED :(

I just tried Oceans' Eleven (PAL R4) and got blank screens, colour fading in and out.

This was tested taking the composite feed from the 963 and inputing it into the VIDEO IN on my VCR.

(seems that my R2 test disk, Red Dwarf, does not use MACROVISION protection)
