HS 10 screen size-distance and ceiling mounting question

Here you have info about how to mount the projector and the different distance screen size information.

Table mounting converted in inches (I also include a diagram in inches for other distances):

Ceiling mounting same distance/screen size.

For the table mounting I noticed that the lower point in the projected image correspond to the center of the lens. The top of the screen is projected with a 20.33 degrees.

How do I figure is out the 2 angles of projection used in the ceiling installation. I need them to check possible interferences with pipe/duct and people watching in my future home theater.

CAE I have been doing the same math as you have... about the same results. I think I can come within an inch or two (cm or four) and then in the end have to tweak the thing with either zoom or a screwdriver (move the thing).

I am looking at the same link, CAE! I am considering a retractable ceiling mount with a scissor lift, non-motorized, that I will make myself, and for the HS-10. If you mount where the lens is about 15 and some feet back, you can use the zoom to make the screen size smaller, i.e. vary it from 120" to perhaps just over 100" diagonal. If you were to do the same thing, the tray could be made large enough to move the PJ a few inches back and forth. I too have duct work I will shoot under, but for a 120" screen to be centered on the wall, the PJ will have to hang 17 inches down from what I can figure. YMMV!!! Happy planning... it is a lot to figure out and any help/input is appreciated!!

Hi mobius1, could you post your design on creating a scissor style lift
for your projector? I would love to create a lift that could lift the projector
into the ceilling.

I am considering an MDF platform that the PJ will sit on, with a scissor lift on either side and perhaps a spring mount, non-motorized. It will pull down from a fitted plywood box in the ceiling, which will have the electrical outlet and video cable access. I may place MDF rim around the platform. Simple as it gets, no? Sorry to have no pics, just in the early planning stage for this.

I looked at the link - here's what I concluded. Table mount doesn't tell you what X is, so there is no way to figure out any offset from teh bottom of the screen. The ceiling mount picture, though, which I assume everyone will be using anyway, tells you a lot. If you do the math, x is within a half inch being b + 1/2 of screen height - thus b is approx the top of the screen. Also, the min and max distances works out to approx 1.75 - 2.1 times screen width for 16:9 screens. Thus a 10' wide screen the front of the projector can be from 17 1/2 feet away to 21' away - my room layout has the the front at about 20' 9" away. I'm just using the standard sony mount and placing the projector just behind the back row.

Thank you for the neat clarification, Alan, that about jives with my figuring too. The PJ will hang 17 inches from ceiling, and that happens to be the distance from ceiling to top of screen too!

CAE, I think you have reversed the axes on your graph, i.e the horizontal x axis should be labelled diagonal screen size, and the vertical y axis should be distance from the wall. I like yours better though, because then I can get 180" diagonal in my 10 foot room ;^) No, actually the screen door would imprint a permanent grid on my eyes sitting that distance from that huge screen!

I am not sure I completely understand the x and b thing. I will have a 119" diag which should give me a max dist of approx 20.8' back. I like you want to move as far back as possible, which in my case is directly above the 2nd row. My room has an two different ceiling heights: my screen is 6.5" from ceiling top verses the viewing area where the projector will be mounted is 3.5" lower than the screen ceiling area thus a net of 3". With all that confusion what would be the optimal measurement to mount the projector down from the ceiling referring to the x & b?

Do you think most people will use the auto screen adjust / offset feature or aim straight on? I wonder what picture quality would be taken away by using this feature? I would like to mount the projector as close to the ceiling top as possible.

My pictures will better explain my ceiling issue than I. Thanks.

119" width = 20.8' max distance. A 119" diag screen gives you a 220" max distance. Don't worry about the x & b - the lense should just be about even with the top of the screen.
