Los Angeles, CA - OTA - Page 282

Anyone know what's happening to BizTV on 54.4? I've been watching Ray Lucia a couple of nights per week. This is the 2nd night in a row that I've noticed a blank screen.

Is it me or does KTTV 11.1 have another annoying watermark on the center bottom? I noticed it on my cartoon episodes (The Simpsons, Family Guy, and American Dad) tonight. I know they have "FOX 11 myfoxla.com" one on the bottom right, but now they have a new on the center bottom? Is this a new trend? I didn't see them last week including Monday night's Terra Nova episode.

I noticed this too when I was watching Cops on Saturday evening. I hope they stop this unnecessary practice, which is indeed annoying. KOCE was doing the same thing a few months ago, leaving a station ID in the upper left corner in bold white lettering for 10 or 15 minutes at a time. Perhaps some of the technicians they hire are unable to grasp even the simple concept that the FCC does not require continuous station identification all, or much of the time!

We should complain to them. I wonder if tonight's Terra Nova episode will have that unlike previous episodes.

Believe you me, the technicians understand this all too well. They hate those things worse than you do. But the technicians aren't in charge of the station.

I didn't see it tonight. =)

Yes, I have not seen it on KTTV for a while. But I can't say the same for KOCE. During an airing of a Nova episode Thursday night they had their all-too-familiar ID:

KOCE-TV
KOCE-DT
Huntington Beach

It appears in intense white lettering in the upper left corner of the picture. It was on constantly on 50.4 during the airing of that episode. It could, conceivably, cause permanent burn-in on some plasma sets. This sort of thing is unnecessary and totally irresponsible. Fortunately it is not there on every program.

I got the following response from them...

Hello.

We are not currently on the air in Los Angeles, but are attempting to get back on as soon as possible and will let you know when we do. We are also available on the internet however, at www.ustream.tv/biztv .

Thanks for watching BIZ TV,

Since last week's wind event I have been unable to get decent signals from the above stations. Is it the cold weather or my DigitalStream set-top box in Hollywood?
Perhaps antenna aiming changed after gusts.

Same here in Van Nuys. Wed night was OK, Thurs night lost pretty much the same channels you did. Others like KCET very low signal. No wind though, not like several days before. I'd figured a cat knocked into it and messed it up, just haven't got around to getting up there to check it out.

Is the network programming on KFLA 8.8 provided by VMAS or TVC+ Latino?

I wonder what happened to Pegasus TV? KDOC has MeTV on both 56.3 and 56.4 now. No mention of problems on Pegasus' website.

If it's up to our politicians/government we will be losing TV access as they give airwaves away.

"The idea is to squeeze over-the-air television, which has few viewers, into a smaller slice of the airwaves. The government would be the broker in the deal and would use some proceeds to fund tax cuts and unemployment benefits."

Probably no viewers and/or nobody cares about that channel as there seems to be no mention of this on KDOC's website or anywhere else.

I haven't watched anything on KABC7 for a few months, and noticed KABC7 was very strong with 80%+ tonight. In the past, it was very weak or no lock. Weird!

I eventually did get back all but KOCE. Might be a damaged antenna though. Still getting an SD feed of their main channel on 31.4. When the weather clears I'll see.

Mom lives in zip 90025 just west of Century City, watches broadcast TV including PBS, has west and south facing windows, and needs as adjustment-free of an antenna (omnidirectional?) as possible. I personally haven't had OTA TV for a long time, so I'm really out of touch.

What should I get for her?

Many thanks,

George

George:

I see that no one has responded yet, so I will give you my 2 cents:

I just had installed a Channel Master CM-2016 HDTV (VHF-HI/UHF) antenna (Fry's - $34.95) on our house in the foothills of Sherman Oaks aimed directly towards Mt. Wilson (Just slightly north of west) and it does a beautiful job of picking up all of the OTA channels for Los Angeles.

However the West and South facing windows are of little or no value. From just West of Century City, you will need a similar or better antenna aimed toward Mt. Wilson, which will be just slightly west of northwest. Check out TVFOOL.com with her address (this is the TVFOOL response for generic 90025):

Hi!

http://www.tvfool.com/?option=com_wr...40330909db0c9f and http://i.imgur.com/q7LS4.jpg (AntennaWeb). Their finds look very bad for my most likely future home.

Google Street View's Photograph/Photo. of the front of the house with big trees from November 2008: http://i.imgur.com/XThYd.jpg ... It is located in La Habra Heights deep on its giant hills and many trees.

Does this mean I am stuck to get many local OTA channels and have to get a cable/satellite TV service to watch compressed HD TV feeds? KCBS, KNBC, KTLA, KABC, KCAL (Lakers!), KTTV, KCET, KOCE, sometimes Chinese stations (e.g., KSCI) for my parents, etc. If OTA is still possible, then how high and crazy will the roof/attic antenna is going to be to get all the channels I want?

Thank you in advance.

I am amazed that the reception is that bad at this La Habra Heights location. I thought that OC was about the most favored location for OTA.

With regard to determining what antenna height is needed for acceptable reception, you can easily answer your own question by running TV Fool and inputting different antenna elevations each time.

Yeah, I was surprised too. I didn't think it would be that much worse. I wonder if it is because it is the side of the hills. You can't see the mountains. Here's the terrain map from Google Maps between Mount Wilson and the future location: http://i.imgur.com/KWz13.gif ...

What are the average of elevation heights for a roof? I will start from there.

Great answer - thanks. Mostly I was concerned about the south and west windows, and you've confirmed that. Nobody mentioned it, but any straight shot in that direction also has the CC buildings right in the way. I've got to rethink this.

Again, thanks.

phildaant, click on any entry in the table of your TVFool report to get the path profile used between transmitter and you. And, yes, it's because you're hard up against the south side of the hill.

To be accurate as possible, use the maps option to create your report. What you get is a Google map with a red icon for the receive location. Be sure it's in the right place (you can zoom in and drag it around). Next, experiment with the antenna height value. Everytime you click away from that box, the predictions update. To create a report to share, be sure to click the "make radar plot" button.

keoki1, the TVFool report shows all the broadcasts coming from the northeast. An indoor antenna should work OK if she's not on the wrong side of an apartment building. The most often recommended model is the Terk HDTVi, but a simple loop-and-bunny ears antenna may be all that's needed.

I used Google Maps to give the general area of the city. I did not want to give the exact location to keep privacies for the house owners.

For general area of that city, I need about 288 or more feet for the local English stations in green color! Woah. I don't even know how tall that house's roof/chimney is from the ground level.

I will try more of TVFool's maps and features after I get home since I don't have the exact address with me at work nor can I remember it.

Consider moving somewhere else. Otherwise, it looks like FiOS is available in parts of that area, so if you can get it at that address then you would at least have an option for the locals with no additional compression.

I don't really have that control. It's my parents' picks. :/ I also checked for Internet. No FIOS there, but it does has TWC. Verizon's DSL speeds aren't good either.

OK, I inputted the exact address and the lowest I could go to get green status for the English local stations I want: 193 feet. Much better than 288! Still high though. What would 193 feet setups look like?
