Cheap high-gain screen advice?

OK, I think I've finally caved. My attempts to produce a high-gain screen with paint and canvas has been interesting but mostly unsuccessful. I think the maximum gain I could achieve would be no more than 1.5 which is simply too low for the light output of my floor mounted Sony VPH-1031Q projector and the screen size I am forced to use. So, I think for the time being, my best bet for HTPC/FPTV enjoyment would be to purchase an inexpensive glass beaded high gain screen.

The models I'm seeking advice on are the Draper Luma Glass Beaded and the Dalite Model B Glass Beaded (not high power). Both have a listed gain of 2.5 and are approximately the same price. I would appreciate any comments on these two screens.

Why not consider the High Power? I find the beads on the GB screens very annoying.

You can't clean the high power screens (Dalite).
I'm not sure about Draper.
Oops, I meant you can't clean the Dalite glass beaded screens.

Yep. That's what happens. you cannot get above about a gain of 1.5 without getting into hotspotting and colorshift problems that begin to get well into most people's areas of personal unacceptability. The only alternative that may work for you is one of the beaded screens. it is my understanding that there are now variations of this screen type available, and these would probably suit your needs. Especially since you are floor mounted and want thar gain back, instead of having it wasted as reflected gain-into your ceiling. I have the manual for that projector, not 2 feet from me right now, and have even set up my scanner, but I cannot find the driver disk. i will have to break down and get it from the net.

Guys,

You can clean a Dalite High-Power screen. It is a "glass-bead" (very small beads though) screen perse, but it has a thin covering over the beads that will allow you to clean it. I used to own one, but sold it when I moved to a ceiling mount. Its a great screen and its relatively cheap. It'll be a perfect match for a floor mounted CRT!

Forget about the regular "Glass Bead" screens from draper and dalite. They aren't for HT.

Are you sure about that? I'm about to plunge into a high power screen from DaLite and all of my information points to the ability to clean the surface. I know you can't clean the GB screen, but the high power has beads so small they are embedded into the surface.

So, for example, the Da-Lite Model B Glass Beaded isn't a good thing for HT, perhaps more intended for an overhead projector or some other application? Could you elaborate on that? How is the High Power screen surface superior beyond the simple washable coating? I ask mostly because the High Power screens are nearly twice the cost of the normal Glass Beaded.

For some interesting reading on the High Power, go to Dalite's website at this link.

In essence, the High Power is so great because it gives you the gain of glass bead without the texture due to the incredibly small size of the beads and the coating applied to the material. Also, you'll never get a gain of less than 1.0 from any viewing angle, unlike many reflective high gain materials.
