Black masking fabric used in visual FX plate photography

I've been working in visual effects for TV and motion pictures for 18 years. When we shoot isolated elements on stage to composite into an fx shot, we have found that a particular fabric gives us a nice, deep non-reflective black background. Black is important because it is the most opaque part of the film, allowing us to pull clean mattes for compositing. Anyway the fabric is called Black Velour and there are two kinds. The one we use is the one with red thread visible at the edges of the fabric. Don't use the Black Velour with the blue thread, it doesn't work as well. It can be found in Burbank at Dazian's (818) 841-6500 or in Hollywood at Fore Peak (323) 460-4192. When we shoot fire or explosions, this fabric really shows how well it absorbs reflective light.

I believe that there is a letter or two with the product. It should speak about the carbon black additive.. careful! I used 7 grams of it to make a grey batch for a 1.5 liter batch! Incredibly intense pigment loading there...

It's 4:1 compared to average commercial paints, and the comparison to average or best available artist grade is 2 or 3 times as much pigment loading. What does this mean? NO FILLERS. Just pigment, the way it should be. Too bad no one else does it. But, then again, no one else knows how.

BAD NEWS! My LT-100 died on Thursday. Cliff Plavin said it was due to a bad power supply. It destroyed the DMD and now I'm going to have to auction it off for parts. I'll be purchasing a new projector this week, most likely a Plus UP-1130 (xga DLP, 1300 ansi lumens, 800/1 contrast ratio @ full on/off - all the sales speak that measures things in rubbery values). I should be spraying a screen by next weekend in our model shop's garage sized spraybooth. Things at The Secret Lab have accelerated and may not be able to jump on this as quickly as I want to. Rest assured, I'll have a screen up before the Ides of March.
