Can someone explain screen gain to me?

Hi guys,

A few of us were having a discussion the other night concerning screen gain, and we had differing opinions about what gain is and how it is achieved, but we all agreed that the results were an apparently brighter image, sometimes to the point of hotspotting, as well as reduced viewing angle as the gain increases. Could someone give us a technical explanation as to what screen gain is and how it is achieved?

Thanks, Matt. That paper had a pretty good explanation and clears things up just fine. I now have a much better idea how light behaves under different conditions. Thank again for your help.
