Are there any 3-chip HD2 projectors in the works?  

There will be but they will be very expensive, big and noisy.

The new Panasonic TH-D7600 will be three chip DLP home theater projector and pricewise will be comparable with (maybe cheaper) the current single chip HD2s. It has a 1280 X 1024 resolution panel. It's size is roughly the same as the other HD2s as well.
Well, we'll see.

3DLPs require a dedicated boot and if possible, a hot air extractor. but if you can make it, it's very nice in a dedicated HT with a 15ft screen and lots of headroom (watts) and an ISCO. SDI feeding might help too :)

Ooops! You're right. I got my info from a Japanese magazine (HIVI) and misread the price--I guess my brain was reading something different! I haven't looked at the link above, but the price indicated in HIVI was about the same as you've written above. Wow!

don't misunderstand me : like you, I wish a 3DLP could be sold to consumers for $10,000 but not now, if any. though $30K is still less than some high CRTs (Cinemax, G90 new).
What we need more now than 3DLP is HD DVD ! HD DVD will blow us away (not the Warner proposal though)
HD DVD in progressive 720p with an HD2 and a black room, and a 13ft screen would be nirvana. in the meantime, an sdi modified playyer with a Vigatec and an HD2, all in digital path (with an ISCO for scope movies), is already a "must have" and will give already a nice idea of HD.

My fearless prediction is that there will be a 3-chip HD-2 announced (or on display) at CEDIA that will have a MSRP of no more than $20K. A quality less than $10K unit is still a ways off.

Call them rumors if you want, but based on my wealth of knowledge (laughter permitted), that is what see coming out.

Anybody remember what the G90 cost when it came out? IMO this is a very good development. It WILL come down in price.

One thing I find so interesting is that people pay a lot of money for just a little more performance in a projector and yet the sources make such a huge difference. We had a shootout of 6 under <$2600 projectors at my house this last weekend and I think the consensus is that the differences between the sources is way bigger than the differences between the projectors.

Aside from the convenience factor, HD looks the same whether it is live, on tape, or on HD-DVD. I have maybe 50 movies + other things taped in HD and people are pretty blown away with how all this looks on a 116" wide screen with a $2600 projector. We didn't have any >$2600 projectors there, but many people have seen the expensive projectors and were still amazed with seeing very clear HD on that big a screen. I do wonder what would look better to most people, DVD on an $8k projector or HD on a $2600 projector, although I think I know the answer for most situations (and assuming that black level isn't the only criteria). I know I was told by one person that my setup totally blew away the Sharp 9000 someone had seen, but that isn't as highly thought of as it used to be and it does depend on the conditions.

But, that said, I still want the 3 chip DLP or 1920x1080 LCOS and the HD.

I have it on good authority, that SIM, will have a 3 chip, dlp by CEDIA. I have no info as to price, etc.

Seleco has had and sold a 3 chip dlp before. It was even tested by several HT rags. I honestly think Ti is the holdup in getting affordable 3 chip units for HT. Ti want all development work to be spent on 1 chip units. They are reserving high price tags on 3 chip "engine control setups" so that manufacturers have little choice but to leave it for Pro Commercial Installs because of the excessive cost.

I do not think the ratio of cost from One to Three chip units is anything close to real world. Its a game of milking the cow for as much as you can and IMHO, Ti is doing it very well.

Seleco indeed had 3 chip DLP.I installed a 1300 five years ago.It was only SVGA.Poor contrast, big, and noisy.And expensive, nearly £40k in the UK.

IT is my understanding they, SELECO, are working on a new 3 chip, consumer orientated model. Again, have no other details on pricing, etc.
