Outdoor remote usage - Can I use IR?

Thread Starter
I'm looking for a remote that I can use outdoors for controlling volume and cd of my setup (which is inside). Is it possible to use an IR remote, assuming the deck area may be 25 ft from the house and it gets a fair amount of sun? Seems that most universal remotes are IR, and very few use RF. So, can I use IR directly by mounting an IR receiver in a window, or do I need some kind of RF extender. Can someone recommend a good RF extender? TIA

The trick is in the receiver (sensor). I had one on the deck of my previous house - it was a Xantech, designed to be mounted outside, that rejected sunlight etc. HNick
