Arxaw,
I'm only able to get a signal of between 65-67 in Conway with my Dat75 and Sony Hd100. It mapped into the Sony on 22.1 but the picture comes in as a pixilated mess and then goes off. I didn't even check to see if it was coming in till I saw your post. I figured if they hadn't done anything yet that they wouldn't the last day!

I am getting them as 22-1 on my Samsung STB. They are showing as 1 flickering bar on signal strength. I do have a solid lock with no macro blocking. However, the poor quality upconvert to stretched 16:9 along with bad audio makes it unwatchable. Oh well, back to the off-air analog station.

KASN-DT UPN 38-1 is coming in on a subchannel of their sister station - KLRT. Both are on RF channel 30.

KLRTDT (fox) is on 16-1
KASNDT (UPN) is on 16-2

Hopefully, Allen will keep it there until repairs are made to UPN 38-1. Maybe he'll pop in here soon with details.
I popped KASN up as noted by arxaw on 16-2 until repairs are made to the KASN-DT transmitter. It all looked great at work, but here at the house I am seeing severe macro blocking on 16-2 - but no trouble with FOX on 16-1. What are you guys seeing?

Allen,
Seeing a little macro blocking on KASN in Conway.
KLRT is looking good.

Allen,
On 16-2 I'm getting lots of pixelization on fast moving objects and scene changes. It was fine earlier in the day, though.

16-1 is fine.
I have an idea or two of what may be happening. I'll look into it tommorrow morning.

allen,
Thanks for the update. It looks a lot better on 38-1 than it did on 16-2

KARK-DT (NBC) Channel 32 (aka 4-1) is experiencing intermittent severe macro blocking (not that it matters; they don't do any HD and are only broadcasting at 4kw from an antenna 500' below their regular antenna).

I talked to "someone" at KARK who told me they are aware of, and working on the blocking problem. They also said the station has NO plans for passing network HD or increasing transmitter power any time soon.

If you want to complain, contact KARK's General Manager, Carl Bruce at:
501 340-4420
cbruce@kark.com

Rumor has it this station will be sold soon, so *maybe* their digital situation will improve.....
Kark sold to Nexstar Communications a couple of weeks ago.

http://www.nexstar.tv/

Little Rock will be one of their largest markets (56th), so maybe they will make the upgrades necessary for decent reception and hd!

heheh, guess that rumor was true.

I've never heard of Nexstar, but I hope they make some improvements at our NBC affiliate. It would be nice to see some NBC shows in HD.

allen,
Ever since KASN 38-1 got back on the air, I've been getting signal dropouts on KLRT 16-1. It randomly drops from 100 to 0 on the SS meter every few minutes or so.

I'm using a Samsung TS160 and a Silver Sensor antenna pointed at Shinall Mtn. I haven't made any changes to my STB, TV, coax or antenna.

Any ideas?

We have done nothing different on our end to KLRT-DT in the last few days except for having to re-boot the GuideBuilder box after it hung. It generates the PSIP stream. This is a long-shot... but if you are still having trouble, delete both 16-1 and 16-2 from your box, power cycle the receiver, then manually re-enter 16-1 and 16-2. Let me know if this cures your problem.

allen,
both 16-1 and 38-1 look fine now.

I saw your brief experiment with 720p.... looked awfully pixelated/blocky - maybe due to multicasting?

And what was 16-4 about?

KATV-DT is showing up from time to time. The RF channel number is 22.

They finally got PSIP remap going, so the station now displays as 7-1 instead of 22-1. They also seemed to have dumped the fake surround sound. The dialog now comes from the center channel speaker, as it should.

If they'd quit stretching the 4:3 image to 16:9, the channel would actually be watchable

Hopefully, they'll get their HD network equipment running soon.

Never got to playing with 720p this week. I had two failures that kept me busy just keeping things going. The FOX HD encoder decided to not recognize its remux card monday afternoon. That card controls PSIP insertion. That is where the weird channels mapping came from (16-4). Ended up having to first birthday the encoder and set it back up from scratch. Recovered from that and had an exciter failure in the transmitter overnight tuesday. That was the macro-blocking you were seeing. I've had enough of the wonderful world of DTV for the week. Gonna give it a rest. Will probably try 720p in a week or so.

allen,

For a brief time, KLRT-DT seemed to be in 720p format. The reason I say this is the Samsung STB's format button only works in all 3 (Full,Letterbox & Zoom) modes if it's being fed a 720p broadcast. For a short time, the format button was working on KLRT-DT and KATV-DT, but has never worked on KTHV-DT. And it no longer works on KLRT-DT....

A brief accident, perhaps?
Humm... Not sure what caused that to happen. The PSIP stream was everything but right for a day or so. I wiped the encoder wednesday. Might have happened then while we were stepping through setting it up. As an aside, Tandberg encoders really want to be in Europe running DVB. It comes up after a first birthday DVB. Takes a while to convince it that ATSC is what we want it to do.

KTHV finally wised up and stoppped simulcasting 480i SD on 11-2. They now show a low bandwidth radar image on that sub channel.

Let KTHV know that you appreciate this improvement in HD PQ, and also the fact that they show everything in OAR (no stretching). Contact them at:
11listens@todaysthv.com
I had noticed the PQ improvement with Kthv.

I thought I had lost Nbc, but it re-mapped to 4.1 on my Sony. No changes in PQ that I can see.

Anyone have information on Katv? Isn't 2/28 their deadline for a digital signal?

KATV is on the air at low power (30kw ERP), on RF channel 22.
They remap to 7-1(720p) & 7-2 (480i).

UNFORTUNATELY, they are stupidly butchering the 720p upconvert using ZOOM+CROP. This causes loss of resolution and loss of part of the image.

The 480i channel 7-2 looks to me like they're taking an OTA analog broadcast and putting it on there. Too blurry to watch, IMO.

Contact KATV Engineering and ask them not to butcher the 7-1 channel. Ask them to show it in Original Aspect Ratio, so we can see the entire picture.

KTHV & KLRT do their upconverts in OAR, and it looks a lot sharper.

KATV is testing their network HD; running a 720p demo loop all morning. It looks great.

Maybe they'll get HD on the air in time for the Oscars!

According to an email forwarded to me, KATV 7-1 will air the Academy Awards in 720p HD (assuming the awards are not cancelled).

Here's some info on the Central Ark. area stations:
KASN and KLRT are at full power.
KATV, KARK & KTHV are all broadcasting at low power. The LP stations may be difficult or impossible for you to receive. At the least, you'll need a very good VHF/UHF outdoor fringe antenna + preamp and a rotor to receive the low power stations.

Only KATV & KTHV are passing network HD programming. None of the other stations are in HD at this time.
Thanks for the info arxaw! I'm also in a sort-of valley with a ridge to the north and to the south, so I doubt I will be able to get any of them then

Allen,

Probably not any time soon, if the forwarded email below is any indication.

They are also trying to get a different channel assignment from the FCC. Link HERE
They were assigned ch 43, but want to change to 44.

I recently moved to Plumerville, AR (45 miles northwest of LR along I-40 near Morrilton). I put up a CM 8 bay bowtie antenna on a 10 foot mast on my roof, and then added a CM 7777 preamp. (On Sam's recommendation--thanks ). The preamp output is going into a Eagle Aspen 5x8 powered multiswitch and I'm using a Zenith SAT 520 HDTV receiver. I'm able to get digital 4-1, digital 7-1, 7-2 (couldn't get 7-1, or 7-2 without the preamp), CBS -11-1, 11-2, FOX 16-1, digital 38-1, analog Pax, WB, several religious channels, and a Spanish LR station on 55. My Zenith will only display signal strength as bad, normal, and good---and all are good with fox, and 38-1, and CBS probably a tie for the strongest. The only one I'm missing is PBS I think. Now I just wish they'd run the Masters again in HD!!
