Charleston, SC - HDTV - Page 259

Nothing yet in JI.

Gotta love todays article in the Post and Courier. Change has been ongoing, but once it hits Mt. P it makes 1st page of the local section. Wow, never knew Mt. P was the only city in the Lowcountry, well at least to the P&C.

Now you know!

Yes, new channels have been turned on. However, Comcast has compressed MPEG streams even further. Especially the new channels. Any motion in the scene kills the resolution. Extremely frustrating that cable/sat providers are willing to sacrifice quality to generate more revenue.

I wonder why the FCC does not have any regulation to prevent this sort of greed.

I'm really rocking this 2.0 stereo from WCBD for the Super Bowl!! Is this 1992? Pathetic.

Yeah, thinking the same thing myself earlier. Screwed around with my receiver and found a Pro-logic setting that is giving me surround.

I would say worse then pathetic. Still being STD for local programming is not good but not that big of a deal to me. But, it really !@$#$% me off to not have DD on the prime network shows. Also a shame that the CW network will not have HD or DD as long as it is a 480i sub channel locally. NBC and CW have some pretty good programming and it would seem that they would have higher requirements for local stations representing them.

I know the guy who mixes SNF for NBC and his 5.1 mix is one of the best in the business. Stinks that I've never been able to hear his mix at home. Good game yesterday anyway. I found a surround mode that kinda worked ok.

Man I thought this was just me, I was ticked off when all I could get is stereo on my U-Verse HD of the game. I mean really even my kids cartoons come in with 5.1. Ridiculous, truly.

Still no Comcast switch on JI. Any ideas when it is suppose to happen?
Still nothing in downtown Charleston (I'm assuming having Fox Soccer HD on channel 517 will be the indicator). I haven't received any updates from Comcast either. I'll keep checking.

Could it be the beginning of HD News for Channel 2? HD sidebars on the news broadcast could be a sign!

Is anyone seeing snow type artifacts on WCBD? Getting it on Comcast and OTA.
Yes. I've been seeing them for weeks. I thought I had a bad HDMI cable but then I saw them on other TVs. They're very noticeable in dark scenes and seem to only appear within evenly spaced vertical stripes. I think they may have appeared around the time cgking114 noticed the sidebars during the news so likely something is not right with their new equipment.

FYI,

We are done cutting all the Charleston head end fed area's to our new platform. You should have the new Charleston lineup.

Additional products and enhancements are coming.

PS-I like fast internet....I like faster internet.

Andrews from Comcast

Thanks Andrews !

Faster Internet would be great. But would also like to see less compression on HD channels. Its annoying. Watching fast moving shows like Dancing with the stars ... its very evident. The same show via OTA does not have those problems. Its not just one show ... I see that on CNN ... when they show a video news segment and immediately switch to the studio host ... you can see compression artifacts for a split second ... suggesting that the MPEG I-frames are far apart. Please make them aware that there are still folks out there like me who prefer not to watch his shows on a tiny iPhone

Three years ago I was seeing the 'snow' artifacts that you refer to on WCBD. I watch over-the-air only. There have been short periods during the past three years when the snow artifacts were not visible, but, by far, most of the time they have been there and always quite conspicuous. Fortunately I have a Winegard 7698 antenna, to which I added five more UHF director elements from an old Winegard 7084. It is 34 ft above the ground, and is well-grounded. Thanks to this antenna setup I have typically been able to watch NBC programs on either WIS-10 Columbia, WAGT-30 Augusta, WSAV-39 Savannah or even WTLV-13 Jacksonville, Florida. None of these stations - in fact none of the numerous other stations I get - is afflicted with these artifacts. So, except for an occasional quick glimpse, I never watch WCBD.

Looks like WCBD 2 (NBC) is the losers when it comes to HD news. Sadly for now, they're the only station in the Chucktown market that don't do news in HD (nor widescreen SD). I felt sorry for those in the Lowcountry wanted to see Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy! in HD and other high-def syndie programs on WCBD 2. If WCBD went HD if I was in Charleston for a trip, it would be groovy to see Rob Fowler in HD!

In my market (Greenville/Spartanburg, SC) they show nearly every HD show in high-def including Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy! on my local ABC station. We even get our local CW station in HD, I felt sorry for Chucktown viewers wanted to see The CW in HD.

BTW, when WCIV 4 was NBC until 1996 when it became ABC. Do any Chucktown viewers remember the "4 Leads" logo from 1978-87 with the 1976-79 NBC logo near the 4? When I saw WCIV ads from 1979-87 from the News and Courier (now Post and Courier) online at Google News, they still used the 1976-79 NBC logo instead of the 1979-86 Proud N logo and 1986-present logo. They did used the present NBC logo in 1987 when they changed their logo just in time for 25th anniversary (the logo looked like the LA NBC O&O KNBC 4 1985-94 logo). Had you ever watched WCIV 4 (during the Dean Swanson/Dee Earley Crosby era) between the early 1980s-mid 1980s, did they ever show the Proud N NBC logo on the WCIV 4 ids and the current NBC logo on the IDs from 1986? What ever happened to Dean Swanson? I know Bill Walsh (now at rival WCSC 5 doing weather) used to be on WCIV 4 during Hurricane Hugo in 1989.

Me too! I think HD News is right around the corner.

I'd much rather have 5.1 audio on network programming than "HD" news on WCBD.
It is not exactly a either/or situation.

DITTO! But no valid excuse this day and age for their current tech level IMO.

For anyone using a cablecard on Comcast with Windows Media Center apparently the Zip2it.com site that Microsoft gets its channel info from has recently renamed the Comcast North Charleston ... that you set up in the Settings>TV>TV Signal>Set Up TV Signal section. Once you run through it and get to the spot where you select your cable provider, there will only be one option for Comcast now. Select that and finish the setup and after the guide updates you should no longer have "No data available" for many of the channels.

Thanks for posting this - I have the same issue. At least I know I was on the right track last night with trying to run setup again.

Unfortunately right now I can't get WMC to recognize that I'm getting any TV signals right now at all so I can't get to the point where I can select Comcast but I'll keep trouble shooting. The PC is still recognizing the Ceton tuner and CableCard fine and all of this (except for the missing program guide data) was working fine before I tried running setup again.

Just to bump this idea a little, do we have any updates on when/if we might get BBC America in HD on Comcast?

Dean just had his 50th wedding anniversary last week. He is like a lot of us: A little more grey and little more waist line. But that beats the heck out of the alternative!!!!smile.gif
