I think on my Brighthouse, and it depends on the program, the best HD is FOX and close behind CBS:cool:

Dropped BH for TV and pciked up DirecTV yesterday. What a great move! So many more HD channles, Whole home DVR and VOD. Will drop BH completely when we move to Redland area and can get AT&T DSL. I was surprised when I turned in my box and cable card that BH acted like the didn't care at all. No deal was offered (not that I would've taken one) or questions asked. I've never had that happen before. for me, it's not about the money (even though I'm actually saving some now), it's about the services offered. BH just couldn't cut it. Now I have to figure out how to sell this TIVO Premier XL I'm on contract for until March. Any suggestions? Do I sell it, use the money to fulfill the contract and then let someone start a new agreement with TIVO? The Premier XL is a great box but not compatable with the current DirecTV boxes. I got a "Genie" (HR34 and one HD client).

jason,

What have you heard about the difference in picture quality between DirectTV and Dish?

Most people say that DirecTV has a little better HD PQ but Dish has better SD PQ. Over the past year I've gone from Dish to Brighthouse to DirecTV. (We were with Dish for over 5 years b/f that so we don't usually jump around). Honestly, BH had the best PQ for HD, I think. I used the TIVO box with THX for my main TV with BH and the PQ was incredible. DirecTV is not quite as crisp. Both are upconverted to 1080p through my Onkyo receiver. However, in the Master we used the BH provided box. DirecTV looks better than BH in that room. Back to your question, from my experience Dish and DirecTV are comparable in HD PQ. I don't watch enough SD to give an opinion. Some times it just depends on the channel. For example, Animal Planet HD didn't look that good to me on Dish but great on BH and DirecTV. DIYHD doesn't look that good on Dish or DirecTV. I really, really liked Dish but I left b/c my promotions were over and they keep having these contract disputes. Also, they did not/do not have Disney Jr. or Sprout. Brighthouse offered better pricing and the promise of better services. Well, my new customer pricing was about to end and I found out that there were a bunch of empty promises regarding better services. I now have 90 HD channels in my package (more than that available), VOD and whole home DVR. Dish and DirecTV are pretty equal to me when it comes to customer service, pricing and PQ. It really comes down to channels now to me. Dish doesn't have any of the Disneys in HD, AMC HD, ESPNU HD or Sprout. I've got a 1-year-old and 3-year-old so Sprout and Disney Jr. are a must. I know, long answer to a short question. I hope I answered it though.

AMC is back on Dish Network.

If anyone is interested, I'm selling my TIVO Premier XL. It's slightly used (under a year) and can accomodate a cable card and antenna hookup at the same time. The guide will display the OTA and cable channels seemlessly. I'm not asking much. Just send me a PM. Going to DirecTV left no need for the TIVO any more.

Has anyone with a TIVO gotten the program guide for channel 32????

I haven't.

I've dwelt with Tivo before and came to the conclusion that unless I was willing to take blood pressure medis, I'd better stay off the phone with them. smile.gif

It's about the same for us here Jim....mad.gif

Just switched from Dish to DirecTV yesterday, had there new Genie system installed. Got tired of the constant long channel disputes with Dish like the never ending Disney lawsuit. With Direct we finally get the Disney stuff in HD again plus the new Disney Jr. and I now get ESPNU in HD, finally! Love the new setup, can record 5 shows at once and play them back in any room, pause and rewind live TV in any room. Direct seems to have a lot more On Demand content as well and they are including NFL ST free for the rest of this season. I'm not the biggest NFL fan but, it will be fun having more then just 3 games to watch on Sundays. PQ seems about the same, HD may be slightly better but I can't really tell plus I've only had it for a day. I will say that there are 2 things I miss from the Dish DVR. We loved the ability to create groups on the DVR and be able to better organize all the recordings. Also, the menus and guide just seems to operate smoother on Dish. I think the DirecTV UI looks prettier but is a little sluggish compared to the Dish UI. Overall, I have no regrets about switching.

It appears that DirecTV has added The CW in HD for Montgomery. Haven't actually looked at the channel but the little "HD" logo appears in the guide next to shows on WBMM. Will have to check that out tonight.

Edit: Checked The CW and it is in HD on DirecTV now.

We are enjoying our new DirecTV service as well. that is good to hear about the CW HD as I was using an antenna to get it. At first I thought Brighthouse had a little bit better PQ than DirecTV but after a couple weeks I think DirecTV is right up there if not better

Hey Jason,

Have you had any issues with your Genie / client setup? We had a HR34 and 3 clients installed and this morning 2 of the clients wouldn't show any video. You could still see all the menus and guide but no video for live TV or a recorded show. Took hitting the red reset button on the HR34 to fix everything. I just hope it was a one time glitch and not something that will happen on a regular basis.

No problems here. The clients are a tad slow but no other issues. It did take me a while to get the AN21 working right for my OTA channels. That took several reboots of the HR34.

Flipping back and forth between CW HD on antenna and DirecTv and I can't tell a difference in PQ. smile.gif I'll still keep the antenna up for sub channels and WIYC HD. Brighthouse and DirecTV have CW Montgomery HD but none of the other providers do. I wonder what the hold up is.

Guess it'd then be a question of overly compressed OTA or overly compressed by the satellite/cable companies.
No, I have DirecTV and the signal is crappy both OTA and on D*. All I can figure is that over time the local stations have either added too many substations or have messed with their compression. Football is just awful. Regular shows are ok most of the time. Although fast action scenes get ugly on all of them now.

They recently changed the frequency that they transmit on.

You'll have to do something like a channel scan to find the new frequency.

Yes I've read a little about them changing to channel 31.#

that's the first thing I attemped multiplie times rescanning no luck, attempted to manuelley add channel both 32. and 31.

weird thing is these channels 32.1 32.2 come in fine on the TV and DVR tuners just not the PCs tuners Windows 7 media center, Haupage 1800 tuner.

I see these channels on windows media center guide infor. and shows are correctly posted when I manuelly added channel 31. the guide dos'nt reconize 31 and dissplays no data.

when I check for signal strengh w/ W7MC all other channels have full strenght except 32.1 32.2 they have very weak signal.

would be nice to be able to record HD content on ABC & CW.

Thanks for any tips

You'll like need to go into MCE and manually delete the old channel first, then rescan.

I'm not from your area, but it looks like you're dealing with two different stations, an ABC affiliate WNCF with virtual channel number 32 transmitting on RF 31 and a CW affiliate WBMM with virtual channel number 22 transmitting on (gasp) RF 22.

Each station transmits its own network in high def on the .1 channel and simulcasts a standard def version of the other network on its .2 subchannel..

Sorry if this has been answered. I'm in Wetumpka and looking to get DirecTV. Can anyone confirm whether local channels are available in Wetumpka with DirecTV? The website they send you to to check for local channels says no, but it also says no for Montgomery, and I know 2 people in Montgomery with DirecTV that have all the local channels.

Thanks for your help.
DirecTV does carry Montgomery locals and you can get them in Wetumpka. Most of them are in HD.

Will a TiVo work with Brighthouse and take the place of there DVRs? What is the cost using TiVo compared to renting DVRs from BH
