MacroVision remover

Hello,

I am new to this board and am in need of a MacroVision remover so I can backup some of my DVDs to tape for use in the car.

I looked in the FAQs and didn't see a purchase reference although I kinda feel like I know what they do.

Where is the best place to look for these? I have searched in Yahoo and it seems like there are none offered by major retailers I feel comfortable doing business with.

Do they really work? (kinda like to know before I spend the money)

Are there software ones for computer use?

Thank you!

Rip your DVD:s to your harddisc with DVDdecrypter first and you can just choose the option to remove Macrovision.
DVDdecrypter is freeware and can be found here: http://www.dvddecrypter.com/

Use DVDIdle and do a direct dub.

If you want to do this without first dubbing to your PC, you can use a Sima SCC. This is the only product (that I'm aware of) that strips both Level I and Level II (colorstripe) Macrovision from the video signal so that a DVD can be dubbed to VHS or routed through a video distribution system.

I have one & can vouch that it works well. Costs approx. $120 (from J & R, www.jandr.com).

Thank you everybody for the input.

I will definately be downloading the apps listed.

I read about the 2 kinds of Macrovision and understand that v2 is uncommon?

I also checked ebay and found some listings for removers and will probably go that route for now as far as hardware removal goes.

Thanks again!

Type 2 Macrovision (ABC + Colorstripe) is actually pretty common on DVD's. The products that you find on eBay are likely to only work with Type 1 (AGC only).

Hope this helps

Well, looks like software may need to be my recourse even though I really just wanted to go between my DVD player and my VCR.

I bid on a unit on eBay and then got a message that the auction was cancelled for "Circumvention Device" sale!!!

Weird because they (eBay) have tons of listings for CATV set-top descramblers, region-free modified DVD players etc.

Heck, you could probably consider DVD-X-COPY a "circumvention device" and they have tons of copies listed too.

Anybody here know a reputable vendor?

The Sima SCC is available here: http://www.videoguys.com/sima.htm for $99.95.

I got one here a couple of years ago, and it works great!

DVD Region Free might also kill Macrovision, you'd have to check out www.firmware-flash.com for details.

Or, if you're willing to partition your drive and install Linux on one of your machine's partitions, none of the Linux DVD players bother to implement Macrovision. (MPAA tried to screw us Linux users over, so why should we implement Macrovision for them?)
