You are correct though that the OTA of KOMO-DT does NOT exhibit this problem. You might pass this on to Kelly A.
Hi Ron -
Kelly has been in contact with Dolby Labs to try to deternine the cause of the dropout in their encoder with on some receivers. They say that the transition from 2.0 to 5.1 causes a break in the bitstream that makes some receivers have to take a few seconds to re-synchronize. The simple solution would be to leave it in 2.0 at all times. However, 5.1 has a lot to offer, and KOMO has chosen to try to solve the problem. The station automation has the equivalent of a contact closure to switch the audio along with the video. Dolby says that it will take a serial digital command to make the switch seamlessly.
What is really interesting is that some receivers see the dropout and others don't. My Samsung SIR-T160 has digital output going to a Kenwood 5.1 decoder/amplifier and I have never seen the dropout. I have recently heard of some other off-the-air receivers having the problem, however.
At any rate, be assured that the guys a KOMO are aware of the problem and are working with Dolby and Comcast to find a solution.
