El Paso, TX - HDTV - Page 50

It's official, MundoFox is going to be on Entravision, on 65.2, bit dissapointed since it won't be on HD.. unless they completely dissapear 65.3 and use all available bandwidth.. I don't think they are downgrading 65.1

They only said "soon" I don't know if they'll match the country's premiere date..

On a lark, looked up TWC upcoming channel changes. There is a statement that on August 21 viewing of unencrypted cable channels may hampered because of technical changes. If you lose them, just do a rescan and you should get them back.

Hello,
I know that it has been awhile since I have posted onto this forum and I just had some questions.

Does anyone know how the progress of KVIA's HD upgrade is going?
I have not heard anything from their newscasts nor from their website.
Is the project ahead or behind schedule?
>>I would really like for them to have it done by September, in time for all the new fall shows.

What about the CW? Will they add HD equipment there too?
If they do, will DirecTV and all the other pay tv providers add an HD channel?

Thank you for addressing some of my questions,

Here is the station managers e-mail, he originally told me their plans for new equipment. E-mail him and ask and let us know, KevinLovell@kvia.com

CW is on a sub carrier of KVIA, There is not enough bandwidth to carry 2 channels in HD, The are doing 4 channels and they really should drop at least 2 to allow for more bandwidth for 7-1 for better picture etc.

The satellite carriers do not carry any of the sub channels for any local stations. If you want them you have to use OTA> I think TW cable carries them

XEJ TV out Juarez is now over the air on channels 5 (analog), 5.1 (SD), and 5.2 (HD). Seems strange the HD channel is second, but it comes in great. Lots of music videos, both in English and Spanish. Time displayed in channel information is strange: 3 hours and 38 minutes ahead of local El Paso time. Haven't seen anything in TV Guide listings yet. So don't know if they only show music videos--haven't checked at all hours of the day and the website kind of shows there are other things, I just haven't seen them.

This morning KVIA on DirecTV was in HD; actually the no HD is an equipment problem, not a transmitter issue. Also, I have noticed something odd for the past couple of days (since Monday). On Good Morning El Paso, exactly at 6:10 am they will go to commercial: after the widescreen abcnews logo, there will be three 30 second *Widescreen*smile.gif national ads. This is very predictable, they have been doing this since Monday. I am not sure if they are getting closer to being able to record in HD or not. I also don't know if they are using old or new equipment, but whatever they are using now, they can record in widescreen SD (almost looks like EDTV). I will contact them soon. Maybe the reason they did not reply was that they were indeed doing some type of test on the new HD equipment.

On another note, the other day while browsing wikipedia to check on KFOX-TV's fate, since they are up for sale, found that someone posted that they were developing a noon newscast for this fall. Does anyone know if this is true? They did not cite their source and KFOX's website has nothing. If this does happen, this will be the first noon newscast in El Paso (other than KVIA) since KTSM discontinued it around 2008/2009. Hopefully the new owner will continue to allow KFOX to be a major player in the local news market. It also seems like KTSM has lost their steam in the local news coverage. I remember just 4 years ago, they were the top dog when it came to news, they debuted the first El Paso HD newscast on August 3, 2008 at 5 PM. Now they hardly have any news coverage (especially in the morning) and reporters/anchors seem to come and go frequently.

That being said, here is my list of the top El Paso news stations: (please submit your own list)

1. KVIA [ABC7]
2.KFOX
3.KTSM [NewsChannel 9]
4.KDBC [Local4News]

I'll try and check in the morning, will have to drag my but out of bed and watch on the main HD TV. I have Dish and OTA so I'll try to check both. I will be glad to see the end of the year come when all stations have to comply with the new audio fed rules. Right now they are all messed up with huge volume differences between stations and programs.

It's sad that a 480p youtube vid looks better than KVIA's SD... I pretty much quit watching late night there.. I email them about Extra HD being in SD... no response either..

Arti:Well I got up and watched and you are right! The commercials local and national seem to mostly go to "letter Box" both side and top. I watched both ways through Dish and straight OTA and the same thing. They broadcast in 720P, according to my TV and if I had to make a guess I would say that when the return to local news their HD picture is not as good as CBS or FOX. Probably because, like I mentioned before they are running 4 channels and just aren't allowing enough bandwidth for 4-1. They should drop the local weather and the spanish station. Just keep 4-1 and CW. All stations in town just run standard stereo when local and KVIA is the only one, until new equip, that doentr run 5.1 dolby.

Dr Lar: try email to KevinLovell@kvia.com He did answer one time when I complained about audio. He said then they are getting new equipment sometime this fall, but an update on progress would be nice.
Paying little more attention, I noticed KTSM has some commercials in top and bottom letterbox and KDBC's Young and the Restless opening logo also.

Last nights opening of the Olympics said 5.1 sound (first time I noticed this other than CBS) and with my surround system also all the local and national commercials were 5.1 but the local news went back to stereo. Maybe they got their new audio running. Will keep eye out.
Is it the NBC feed or Channel 9 the one at fault of several glitches on the Olympic transmittions, they are getting annoying like 1 or 2 every 10 mins.
I think it is KTSM. They actually have two OTA channels which show as virtual channel 9-1 (9-3 and 16-3, don't ask me why). My TV picks up both versions of channel 9-1. I always go to the second (16-3) as it seems more stable and less likely to disappear. If your TV doesn't give both choices, using the remote enter 16-3 and it should take you to the second 9-1 virtual channel.

It's so sad...

Starting July 30, KTSM moved Dan O'Rourke to the weekends. Why would they do that??!!! He is a pro at newscasting and has been doing it for over 20 years; I guess they thought he was too old. Then they put the new guy Keagan Harsha, in their "flagship" newscast at 5, 6, and 10. I think they only should have moved Adrienne Alveraez; she and Dan O'Rouke would have been perfect.

What do you think?
I agree completly. Dan has personality. This new guy is young and I am sure he can work out eventually, but it is not fair to make such an obvious demotion to channel 9's lead newsman. However, KTSM's news show is a revolving door of personalities over the past few years. The only reason I watch them in the evening is that I am already on channel 9 for the NBC News and I like to watch KVIA in the morning and if I have seen channel 7's evening news, the morning is mostly repeats . If they ever get rid of Chuck DeBroder, I will give up on them completly.
I wish they would have left Adrienne over at KDBC and let Jackie Crea (weekend anchor) take over along with Dan. I wonder if Dan is hard to work with. Shortly after he first got here, Oralia apparently couldn't work with him and was given the 6:30 show, which was incredibly terrible. Then Stephania didn't last long. She started out cohosting all shows with Dan, then it went down to 2, then to 1, then to none because she was gone.

Dan hasn't yet been on during the weekend, I guess because of the Olympics or he is on vacation getting the anger out after the downgrade. My guess is he won't be around too long now, depending on how much of his contract is left. I do like having Amber Downing on KDBC in place of Adrienne though. Adrienne is getting on my nerves thanking everyone for choosing the station 3 or 4 times per newscast.

+1 and that is because they read everything off a teleprompter. You even see it in the latest promo.

But But Addriene is so nice looking!

BTW maybe the best looking one in EP area should be Heidi Renpenning from KINT... love her..

MundoFox is on testing signal right now on 65.2, they say on Monday it will officially start...

65.3 is still up, so don't explect the sharpest of pictures, also they framed the image, instead of using real size to fit the screen (I think they exagerated the 4:3 compliance thingy )

The quality is going to sux real bad if this is the final version.

Hello everyone,

I came back here to post an update: I finally sent Kevin Lovell an email! smile.gif
Hopefully I get a reply soon.

Subject: HD Equipment Upgrade
To: KevinLovell@kvia.com
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1

Hello Mr. Lovell,

About 6 months ago, a fellow user on an online forum (AVS Forum) contacted
you about recorded shows not being in HD and you responded by saying there
was a HD Master Control upgrade in the works expected to be done by October
2012.
I have a few questions regarding that:

1. How is the progress going? Are you on schedule/behind/ahead?

2. Are there any other changes planned for this fall?

3. Since you are doing an upgrade to your equipment, does that mean the CW
will be in HD as well?
And if not, do you have a timeline for when the CW
might be in HD?

Also, I have noticed that every weekday morning, for the first commercial
break (at around 6:08-6:10AM), you have 3 widescreen commercials after the
abcnews.com logo. These are the only widescreen commercials I have seen on
KVIA.
4. Is this using the new equipment or the old equipment.

Thank you for reading this and I hope these changes this fall will keep
KVIA the top station in El Paso.

Is there anything else you guys would like me to ask him?
Ask if the equipment upgrades will eliminate the bad sound on the CW at the beginning of many shows (e.g., Vampire Diaries and Nikita) that were experienced the past couple of years.
The only way for The CW to go HD is having their own call sign.. I don't think they are getting rid of the weather thingy and the other channel.

Judging on The CW ratings I don't think they spend that kind of money on that..

How would they get their own callsign? The only way is for someone to make a new station around the CW. I don't think that will happen since KVIA has probably signed a contract for a few years saying they are the only CW "affiliate" in the El Paso area. Although, it's totally possible for the CW to come to another city like Las Cruces, or even Juarez (which is unlikely). But those options are VERY unlikely since we are a small market.

Okay, I'll reply as soon as a get an email back from him if he has not answered the question when he replies. Hopefully he replies soon.

MundoFOX is looking awful, Entravision staff will hear from me... a 16:9 SD screen crushed by two horizontal lines looks so bad... and please get rid of 65.3 you have the same channel on 26.3.

So sad that other markets do have MundoFOX in full HD, instead, we get another The CW as commented before.. Entramvision could have claimed to be the first dual HD on the same channel provider in the El Paso area, but instead they have this mess..

I really do not have much interest in sub-channels in general. Yes, I will watch the occasional old show on 14.2, RTV, but no one would expect much in the way of picture quality on those shows. Other than that, I have not spent all of this money and effort to switch to HDTV and am paying a monthly fee just for the privilege of being able to record, to watch over compressed 4:3 images of shows that were designed to be seen in HD.
I have to wonder just how many people are watching these sub-channels anyway, at least over the air. This TV, 4.2, may get a few viewers who want to catch an old movie, but the Mynetwork shows in prime time are just re-runs of 10 year old crime stories that also can be recorded in the dead of night on channels 4 and 9. My elderly Mother likes 13.2 for some cooking and sewing shows but she does not understand why there are black bars around the picture. I just will not watch the CW on 7.2, on my set I find it to be the softest picture of all the sub-channels except for possibly the weather on 7.4.
I would be interested to hear from those members who watch Spanish TV. From my prospective, just flipping by 7.4 and 9.2 they appear to be very low budget networks compared to channels 11, 20 and 32 from Juarez. And, as Dr. Lar pointed out, the duplication on channels 26 and 65 are just a waste of bandwidth. I could see having 65.1 repeated on 26.2 if one frequency was considerably stronger than the other, but at my location they seem about equal. When LATV was on one of channel 7's sub-channels it also appeared to me to be very low quality.
Possibly in a few years this desire to squeeze in as many low quality channels as possible will pass.

Unfortunately, I have not gotten a reply from Mr. Kevin Lovell. It has been over 3 weeks.

Does anyone know of any email addresses he has used to reply so I can add it to my safe sender's list??

I will have to now email Rick Cabrera to see if I can get Mr. Lovell. I wonder if his message got deleted in my spam.

Any suggestions?

This is the one I have. Kevin said this was his "personal not advertised e-mail" when I questioned him back in Jan of this year. He said then the issues would all be addressed "later" this year., as per Mr swann. An update from him he would be nice so others who care would know.

I am Kevin Lovell, general manager at KVIA-TV. I have asked KVIA operations manager Chris Swann to address your concerns. We will have all of your issues addressed later this year. You now have my direct email address should you wish to ask me any further questions. I do not advertise my personal email address, but still receive communication through kvia.com or passed on to me as Rick Cabrera has done.

Have you noticed also that both KDBC and KTSM' picture is pretty bad, lots of pixilation, I think they are cheating on HD bandwidth again. Some one on this forum, an engineer, called them I think and they corrected it saying they adjusted the bandwidth. Football season is stating and I hate seeing all the pixilation.
I just emailed Rick Cabrera for Kevin Lovell.

I sent the same message as posted before. Hopefully they will respond. If not, then the next step is going through ABC7 Listens.

I will keep you all posted.

You could ask KVIA about Syndicated HD shows being shown on SD 4:3, like E.T. for starters (I think who wants to be a millionare is also here)
