A comment on this "vertical shift": I own an A41 manufactured in March, 2003 in Hungary. I recorded an older film on laser disc that had a row of text right at the very top of the screen - if there were any vertical shift at all, down or up, it would be easily seen at this point. I played the DVD-R on a different machine and synced it and the laser disc to that row of text. There was no shift in any direction - DVD-R and the laser disc playback were absolutely identical. Had there been a shift, however minor, I would sell the machine and look for another one, but I'm keeping it.
One question: Short of recording to the very end (which works), is there any way to get rid of that extra menu box (representing the unused disc) created after you're done recording and know you're not going to record any more? Maybe it's in the manual but so far I've missed it, if it's there at all.
Read up on finalizng the discs and try that.
