I've read at www.dvdplusrw.org that some new 985's - made in March 2003 - still come with the old optical engine. Now, I haven't been able to figure out how to find what optical engine a unit has. Anyone who knows how to do this? How do you guys know what optical engine your unit has?
Take that info with a grain of salt. I have been reading that forum since it started, and it has gotten a huge beating as it one was one if the first boards for one of the first dvd recorders. Thats not to say Philips didn't have problems though, either, with these units. Their seem to be a group of individuals, though not as many now, that posted the same problems multiple times to make the problems look far greater in number than they actually were.
Also whoever does the admin on the board allows more latitude with the posts than other boards so more stuff is posted etc etc. that isn't informative but argumentative in a non-constructive way. In other words the children don't always play well together.
Anyway, to your engine question, I was told the way to find out is take the cove off and read that somewhere inside.
I too have read and heard that about the old engines in march but since Philips told me on the phone one time that there were several versions of later optical engines I would worry thinking someone had got "the old" version in March 2003. The general consensus was that any unit with a mfg date after December 2002 on with the right firmware update should be okay though I am sure there was still old inventory out there in dealers and on hand.
