The only TVs those DTAs look good on are smaller tube sets, on HDTVs they look like crap.

Yep, you're right. I called them and they said that the DTA box is SD only. If I want an HD picture, I have to pay $10 A MONTH for the HD box. I'm not paying an additional $10 a month for something that I have now at no extra charge.

They also said that I can use an A/B switch and a splitter to run one signal through the box and one signal straight and switch between the two. For now, I have bypassed the box and have HD signal coming through. I'm not sure if that will change once the conversion date hits though. We'll see.

You're probably safe after the conversion date for getting the locals via QAM. The time to worry is if clear QAM goes the route of encryption - which they now have the permission of the FCC to do.

I'm guessing this is the case as well. I could see them potentially moving around some of the channels to different frequencies requiring a rescan, but I'm thinking they aren't going to completely remove them or encrypt them. Well, that's my hope anyway...
Well, that box was a total waste of time. The transition supposedly happened two days ago and I'm still getting the same channels and the same HD reception from the straight cable with my QAM receiver. What a joke. They called me multiple times a week to make telling me I HAD to have the DTA box even though I have an HDTV with QAM.

In some areas, such as mine (massachusetts), hd dtas are already available. If they aren't available in your area, and you are still able to pick up channels with your qam tuner tv, definitely stick to that. But thehddtas are great since they catch all digital starter channels and the hd equivalent and music choice. It is a cheaper option than renting the hd digital boxes for $10.00 a month, so you're going to have hold on until your area catches up with this technology

Do you have the HD Technology fee on your bill with the HD DTA?
I'm wondering it the idea with HD DTAs is to eventually phase out the SD digital channels that have HD duplicates. It seems kind of wasteful of bandwidth to have two of all of them, even if the SD channel doesn't take much.

The thing I wish they'd at least do is modifiy the guide so you can only see the best version of a given channel. Every time I see my sister watching the SD version, which is normally letterboxed and pillerboxed to the middle of the screen I "fix" it for her.

Also, has Comcast given up on switched digital video, or is it still vaporware at this point?

All ClearQAM still active in Blaine, including HD locals.
same here in Shakopee

all lifeline is still QAM
HD locals fine
on 18,19,20,22, 96 (HSN, QVC, C-Span, WGN and TBN) is the scroll still
Shocked it isnt on 3 (CNN) and 7 (TBS)....the rest are locals and public access stuff
post #2711 of 2904
As of today, Thursday March 28th, all analog channels have been removed from Comcast in Plymouth, MN.

Fortunately all Clear QAM digital channels remain unencrypted, including local HD's!
same here in Shakopee. All analog is gone but 2-0 has a slate of "If you can see this channel you're not upgraded" or something like that
post #2713 of 2904
some interesting changes after the "changeover" here in Shakopee

analog 2 & 16 (PBS & public access) have the slate...rest of analog is gone
additional channels added now in the clear

43-97 HSN HD
46-2 TBS HD
52-8 Xfinity Latino (looks like a preview channel)
63-3 QVC HD

so now all channels in lifeline that are carried in HD are in the clear EXCEPT CNN (channel 3 or 115-50)

Got an e-mail from Comcast this morning that they increased my Internet speed to (up to) 50Mbps. After power cycling everything, they were right. Noticeable difference.

Not sure if this points to a bigger lineup change, or if this is all we'll see, but Comcast added the 24/7 Feed of Fox Sports North Plus, and will be moving the HD feed from 694 to 963 (which is the only thing making me think there might be more coming). The date for the permanent relocation of the HD channel is tomorrow:

Thanks for the heads up! Good to know for when the Twins/Wolfs/Wild games overlap.

I hope TiVo adds the guide data for Fox sports plus now that it’s part of Comcast regular channel lineup. I missed the start of yesterday’s Twins game because my TiVo said it was on regular Fox sports 893 when it really was on Fox sports plus 694. The Wild playoff game bump the Twins to Plus channel and my TiVo missed it.

I think that was a last minute switch, so I'm not sure guide data would have helped much in that case.

With that said, seeing as how the Big 10 overflow channels have guide data populated on my Tivo, I'd have no reason to believe this wouldn't be true with FSN+. It's too bad there isn't channel space (numerically speaking) down around 863, because then we could have FSN and FSN+ together.

Looking at the Tivo (lineup directly from the cable card) on the Minneapolis system they have the new FSN+H live, but there is nothing but a placeholder there right now. 694 is dead already. 254 is live with FSN+ programming, so I'd imagine the HD channel is forthcoming. Hopefully now that the analog channels have been completely shut off we'll see some more HD channels added. I'd like to see Sundance HD added to the lineup for one.

Is anyone else having problems with receiving clear qam. I am in the woodbury area and yesterday i lost a bunch of channels, so I rescanned and got my channels back. Today I lost a bunch again and rescanned and got them back, but I am still not getting NBC and CBS. Did comcast start encrypting clear qam here? I am only subscribed to comcast internet, but was using my tv's qam tuner to pick up all the clear qam channels.

Haven't noticed any such behavior here in Blaine, thankfully.

Had to rescan today in Eden Prairie, but believe I got most if not all of them back.

Changed to DirecTV/CenturyLink on May 2nd (my first time with satellite) and the technology is so advanced over what Comcast offers I doubt I will ever consider going back. Suck it, Comcast.
All of my local basic channels were mixed up yesterday, the numbers I manually added to get back into Media Center previously were pointing to different stations. I live in River Falls just east of Woodbury. One tv appears to have been able to keep track of the new channel assignments. The other I had to rescan and it was fine. Media Center has been problematic for me in not finding the right channels (when it scans if it finds something it 'loses' it right away). Still haven't found KARE11 or KMSP yet.
Doing some research, it appears Comcast is going to start encrypting local channels soon-

Time to look into an antenna and DSL I guess.

Pilboy, how does the pricing compare and how did the install go? I've been wanting to tell Comcast to suck it for sometime now and my bill just went up again today. I'm tired of having to call them every three months to get another "promotion."

I'm certainly not disagreeing with you, but I know someone who switched to DirectTV that wants to come back to cable (they don't live in the Comcast footprint). Every time weather gets bad, they lose signal. This past winter, they had to climb on the roof several times to clean off the dish. Two things I've never had to do with Comcast. Not trying to convince you, just saying. wink.gif

I actually don't use Comcast equipment, as I have a Tivo HD. I do miss Comcast VOD, but they'll eventually roll that out to the Cisco side, and when they do I'll upgrade to the new Tivo (probably this fall). The Comcast DVR is really bad, and the SA boxes are also really bad. Hopefully they roll out the Xfinity X1 platform here, as that looks like a very significant upgrade (although that still won't get me to switch back to Xfinity gear, I'm too attached to my Tivo).

scanned tonight in the SW burbs and channels were moved around but all lifeline was there

couple noticeable changes
23-3 is no longer Country...its on 72-15 (23-3 is a Xfinity loop)
No channels above 95-11 anymore (the SD stations went from 110 to 71)
some QAM channels are on RF13 now (I think it was 5-1, 5-5 and 9-1)
Channel frequencies have moved up here in Blaine. I'm going to have to change around the settings for my HDHomeruns.
All of our clear QAM channels downtown got scrambled. After rescanning got all but KSTC back. Does anyone know what is is now?
I had to rescan in Plymouth this morning but all Clear QAM channels are still there.
What channel do you show KSTC on, please? This is what I currently have:
OLD NEW
KSTP ABC 0 110-3 5-1
WCCO CBS 1 110-2 4-1
KARE NBC 2 110-7 11-1
KMSP FOX 3 110-5 9-1
WFTC MY 4 110-6 29-1
WUCW CW 5 110-4 23-1
KSTC IND(45) 6 110-8 ???
I was able to find all the same channels on Clear QAM after changing up my mappings. Hopefully they stabilize the stations again. It's a pain. On the plus side, it's summer time so I didn't miss many scheduled recordings due to the change.
