This is kind of funny, I contacted WGBX way back in the early days of digital transmission about how far they go with the letterboxing.
The gist of there reply was the it maintains their content providers artistic values. Basically everything the artist wanted on the screen, would show up on anyone's screen. Even if it meant extreme letterboxing.
Now if they really are cropping content, it contradicts their earlier intent.
I felt a bit better about the original answer, and just got used to finding the correct zoom ratio on my own display.
