Creative 6X? Opinion on this drive?  

I've had the Creative 6x DVD drive for about a year now with no problems.
Yes, you can enable DMA with this drive.

I don't use the DX3 card, it's sitting in a box somewhere. Hardware decoding is not needed. My HDTV is my monitor and the Radeon VIVO does the decoding.

___Not to screw up a deal but the Toshiba 4.8X SD-M1202, the Sony 4.8x, and the Pioneer 6X 103S are great drives although all have been discontinued as well. The problem with the Creative drives is that they could be made by anyone at any given time. Creative does not build the drives but spec’s them from various manufacturers. As for cost, CD/DVD-ROM drives are back down to levels we have not seen in a year and a half and that is on the latest CD/DVD-ROM drives made today. I picked up 2 Toshiba SD-M1502’s 16X/48X’s for just $59.00 last week and they are now down to just $57.00 + shipping today.

___You will more than likely not be using that Creative (Hollywood + decoder card) any more. The SW DVD players have much more capability and quality of output as long as you have a 400 MHz or faster CPU and optimized SW.
