DMR E80 Playback of Commerical DVDs?

I have a simple question. I see the DMR E80 as a "digital vcr" that should play off the shelf DVD movies flawlessly. Or at least as good as any other progressive scan player. Am I wrong?

The E80 features excellent progressive scan playback. But why would you use the E80 for playback? Why not use the S35 for playback and the E80 for recording only? I would rather burn out the S35, $88.00, rather than the $500.00+ E80.

It comes down to how much room is in the rack and my significant other's ability to switch between 2 different DVD players without getting confused!

Believe me, if I put 2 DVD players in the stack it would blow her mind...

Of the praises I give the E80, progressive playback is not one of them. It is a good picture, but the CP-72 is better. Better definition, better color saturation. Scenes that look stunning on the CP-72 look very good on the E80. I have it set to "Dark" (anything less looks washed-out) and set to "Fine", which does help improve the picture greatly. Both are using the same good cables on a calibrated Mits TV. Don't get me wrong, the E80 does put out a very good picture, but you can definately see the difference when you play the same disk on the CP-72.

tampa8,
I'm running a Panny A120 that's I've had for a few years now. I am hoping that the picture quality is a bit better than the 120. The 120 is interlaced and I'm using my HS10 to do the video processing.

Is the E80's progressive output "user friendly" or do you have to go down 3 or 4 levels in the menus to setup your progressive picture?

Also, do you feel there is a value to a multiple disk changer? I've never had one and don't see a great value in it. Maybe I'm just uninformed...

I can understand spacing requirements but for me the E-80 is my recorder only- I want it to last and do only what it was really made for- Unless someone proves to me playing DVD's on it improves it's life expectancy.

HoustronGuy-- If you make it last too long you won't be able to justify replacing it with the "significant other"...

There are two places to set the Progressive out mode - one you only set once and it is inside other menus. Then you can switch back and forth easily by hitting one button (display) and scrolling to it.

The only reason I have the CP-72 is because the RP-82 was not available. However, now that I can record DVD, it is nice to be able two put two or more disks in of family movies or the second of two commercial discs. But I agree with you a multiple disk changer is not a must have for me either.

The PQ really is good - it's just that the CP-72 is so great. It is not a night and day type of thing - but you can tell the difference.
