Help me get started with my HTPC

Thread Starter
Just ordered a NEC CRT from AVS and instead of buying their scaler decided I wanted to do an HTPC. I am building my dedicated ht for use only with DVD, DirectTV and VHS(have hundreds of them might as well use them.) Do I need the scaler to get these into an RGB connection or can I just run them all into my avr? If so is there just a simple device that will do this without the $1500 price tag? I have a friend who owns a comp store and will get me all the parts at cost. How much chip and processor do I need? What cards do I need if I never care to record or play antenna based signals? Any help would be appreciated. (Pardon my newbieness if I asked a dumb question)
