The original copy-guard schemes were embedded in the tape. The earliest type actually weakened the vertical sync (many viewers had to keep their fingers on the vertical control just to get through a viewing of the first release of "Superman."
Then came the pulsing little demons that tried to confuse the recording VCR's AGC circuitry. This led to many devices that either masked the macro-vision or generated a new sync signal altogether.
You are correct about Beta machines; I was ready to put one to the curb when a friend suggested eBay; It sold for well over a grand!
