A better grey screen - Page 20

riekl using melamine like cappra has used is a couple of steps easier than mdf it saves priming and gives a good base to paint whatever paint you want, that is what i used on my main screen but they have a pretty smooth surface so before your first coat just give it a little scuff or use liquid sandpaper it helps to dull shinny surfaces for your paint to adhere to

CMRA,

Is ME two coats of Misty Evening over top of two coats of Kilz primer?
Do you wet sand between coats leaving the final coat very smooth?

Thanks for your help.
I think ME will be a GREAT DIY starter screen.

Dobber-
Yep, that's the basic ME screen. Kilz2 to prime, then 2-3 coats of ME on top. Wet-sanding is not necessary, but it will definitely help matters when viewing HDTV and high-quality DVDs.

Thanks, scoob5555.

I spent 90% of my HT budget on the projector (Z2) so a cost effective, DIY screen solution became mandatory. CMRA's screen shots are what convinced me to try ME.

In the beginning...
Specifically, I used 2 coats of kilz 2 white pigmented latex primer followed by two coats of ME. No sanding was required. Others have opted with favorable results.
Just so there is NO misunderstanding, this is the ME you want:

It looks like this:

Thanks, CMRA. I printed out the picture of the can lid and I will verify that is what I bought. Thanks for all of your contributions to these forums. You and others like you, have saved me and others like me, years of research on HT. Keep up the good work.

Dobber,
While you are at it, your ME at the ready and all, there's talk about adding pearl-essence to the ME mix. One person mentioned using it as a topcoat another mixing it with ME. While your'e making your screen, would you give this some consideration and report back your findings to all. ( a couple of smaller test panels will do) Thanks, CMRA

Forgot to respond. Thanks for the kind words. That's pretty much how I looked at it too. Awhile back, another member took down his Grayhawk in favor of the ME. Never will forget that. Best wishes.

H E L P...

I have a Z1 - I'm very excited about painting my screen (artist canvas) in ME.

Question: must you use the Masonry and Stucco Latex. HD in my area has the ME color, but not in the Masonry and Stucco.

Thanks
Just use exterior latex

The masonary thing was simply due to the original coating coming from leftover masonary paint that 'cheap 'ol CMRA had left over. You sure DO NOT want excessive texture. In fact, the smoother the better.

Ya know, it could have been lemon yellow if the odds had played out differently.

Talk about a 'pissin' contest over DIY screens!

Hey MM,

I could go back 29 pages and loose my eyes and patience, but...what have you done with your screen?

Thx

I've been up to my knees fending off gators, but I did make it to Home Depot and got more pearl-essence...the last jar of white opal on their shelf. Hopefully, I'll get a breather by Thursday and have an ME/Pearl first hand report to share. Do I dare just shoot a coat of opal atop my ME screen? Or a 50/50 mix?

First report: Single coat of white opal atop ME not enough to make a difference.
Test two: Two and three coats of white opal on top of ME. (coming)
Test three: 50/50 mix ME with white opal. (coming)

Two coats introduced to much sheen, hence potential hotspotting. The overcoat appears to be a no go. The 50/50 mix should be projector ready today.

The 50/50 holds promise. Watch out! Today, I plan to mock up a 75/25 panel for testing. Side by side too. Screenshots?

I searched this thread and can not find a review of a DLP with this ME screen.
I have a 240K and I am interested in reducing the greenish tint in my blacks, making them seem deeper. What is the consensus?
Just an FYI ! I put my 2 coats of ME on my blackout cloth DIY frame last weekend and it did exactly what I wanted ! My projector is an HS20 the blacks still aren't black as a crt which I didnt expect them to be but some day !

anyway very happy with good ol' ME don't think i will be experimenting much more on this level happy with this solution, thanks for all your hard work CMRA !

Well, I could not wait, I went out to HD and got the ME grey but not in the same base as mentioned. They did not have masonary base. I guess I will see tonight if it made a difference on my Da-lite matte white screen..

To sheen or not to sheen. As previously mentioned, two coats of WO atop ME is a no-go. Way to much sheen and notable hotspotting. One coat, after curing actually became more desirable than the 50/50 mix. The jury is still out on the 75/25 mix.

I can see Rahu's excitement in a way. But as always, you don't get something for nothing.

Back down to the dungeon to work on 'Black Pearl'.

CMRA - keep the goods coming!!! all your grey DIY is certainly appreciated. i have a gallon of ME, some White Opal and am just waiting eagerly for tomorrow to start it up...
I watched LOTR last night on the new ME screen. I suppose it is better. I have nothing to compare it to. I wish I could be more comprehensive.

Has anyone used a FL-D with a Grey screen?

What ever you do, save some WO and mix in some lamp black colorant and give that a whirl. I'm in the process of trying that on a mirror. I wouldn't mind some feedback from others. Another attempt is the same with some pigmented primer added. I'm calling it 'Black Pearl' and 'BP Lite'.

What do you do with all that left over SM? Mix it with white pigmented primer, that's what. Talk about quick and easy. ANd it works in light fusion applications also. Mix thoroughly.

PS: It looks grey too.
it's all good. after much ado and mixing all kinds of ME/ME lite/ME WO etc etc. I went with a kind of ME slightly lite mixed with WO. couldn't be happier. DLP projector gets much better blacks/blues and haven't lost much on the bright side of things. after callibration I am totally set on the cheapest screen possible, just paint the wall, that's all. THANKS CMRA! and all others on the grey side of life.

Ok...but, how are you dealing with the wall texture? Also, will you boarder your screen? Good viewing and best wishes, CMRA.
CMRA, Have you made any observations with the WO/Black combo either on a mirror or on a wall?
INFO: I painted my Da-lite matte white screen. It curled on the outer edges.

last post here
CMRA - after several coats, the wall's texture has become kind of a non issue for me. my old plaster walls were pretty smooth to begin with, i'll live. border complete with black felt wrapped around and glued to 3" thin posterboard. this, gasp, i tacked to the wall with staples. can post a pick if you'd like...cheapo city!

Picks, nothing! It's time for screen shots!
