How about "Digital Video Essentials"? Anyone find a working lookup for this disc?

I was pleasantly excited to put in my Matrix Reloaded DVD (2 disc, widescreen) into the system and the see it was found in OG. Then I came back to reality.

a) It showed up as Matrix, Reloaded (Disc 1), The. I then added disc 2 thinking obviously the first one is titled to imply a set. I just changed the "1" to a "2" and did the manual search. No luck. I'm just using Disc 1 info for that now but will report it.

b) It showed up in the Action genre. OK...BUT Matrix, The shows up in Sci-Fi. Why different?!? 1) I could use the Entre menu to move one to the others genre or 2) I could edit the XML file for one of them and change the genre. 1 is safer but 2 is curious.

P.S. I noticed for the second time recently that DVD Profiler (registered vers) uses the front cover art for the "back". Perhaps it is the contributors only submitting the front and then that is the default action. I'll inquire.

Is there a site that actually lists what is on Openglobe and what the titles are?

At first I thought you were kidding...then I looked at your question from a different angle. There is not one. This thread is to (I thought) a) note missing titles and b) identify exactly what to type in the manual search because their search is so absurdly stupid.

OG had design meeting on how to make it easy for users to do searches...then they said oh the hell with it...let's make it rigidly exact and a single return instead of a list...ya that'll fix those darn paying customers~!! KW is just using what OG gives them no doubt.

I think they just bet a lot of money that their automatic look up would find "all" the DVDS (ie. their VideoDB see above). It's reasonable but not that great.

The Entre's request to the OG website when it does a lookup is via HTTPS.

Most of my personal movie titles have identified, except for "Fast Times at Ridgemont High". I have a number of childrens titles missing:

Thomas The Tank Engine and Friends: James and the Red Balloon
Thomas The Tank Engine and Friends: The Best Of Percy
Thomas The Tank Engine and Friends: Thomas' Winter Wonderland
(These are the only 3 in the series of 14 DVD's)
Barney: Barney's Beach Party
The Wiggles: A Wiggly Movie
Sesame Street: Kids' Favorite Songs Vol. 2
Jay Jay The Jet Plane: Good Friends Forever
Jay Jay The Jet Plane: Lessons For All Seasons
Jay Jay The Jet Plane: Liking Yourself Inside & Out
(Jay Jay The Jet Plane: Learning Life's Little Lessons Has Been Identified)
The Three Little Pigs (1990 Madacy Release)

Idiotic, if you ask me. The OG DB doesn't seem to have been updated in a few weeks now. The Lion King, The Kids Are Alright and The Osbournes Second Season are three disks in the Nielsen/Soundscan top 20 DVD Sales Chart that come up not found (I don't have any of the others, but one wonders about them too).

FWIW, I've just come up with a pretty good way of tracking my not found disks, I need to do this because I don't leave my unfound disks listed as Unknown DVD, but instead type in teh correct title. So whenever I get a not found disk, I use DVD Profiler to track its status. What I did was to create a rental user called "NotInEntre" and whenever I get a unfound disk, I loan it to that user. Then I can create reports of all my rented disks, and sort on the ones to NotInEntre.

Also, FWIW, here's my current report on unfound disks:

Robert,

That is a very good idea. But I think as long as you don't do a search and find something similar and change the text, the entre will track it as an unknown and continue doing lookups.

I currently have 23 unknowns of which only 3 i have left unknown waiting for OG to be updated. the other 20 I typed in myself. Everytime I do a get info, those 23 get looked up.

Now if you do a search on Lion King for example and pull up Lion King II and modify it so it reads Lion King. The entre thinks it successfully found it and remove it from it's internal unknown list.
Please will anybody who takes active interest in these boards let everyone else know perhaps when the OG gets updated. I will do the same..Still looking for Kramer vs Kramer plus a few other. Im not sure how many other configurations i can try for Kramer other than Kramer :(
post #74 of 117
it's the darnest thing. several dvds that i had out because the entre identified them as unreadable, i today put back in and it read all of them.

it even found Belle's Magical Christmas, Best of Thomas, Best of James, automatically.

Still no Lion King or Indiana Jones. Manually I was able to look Dr Seuss: The Cat in the Hat. No match for Dr Seuss: Lorax though.

Hmmm. You wouldn't by any chance have found that disc 2 of Beauty and the Beast or Tron now are readable?

I just received, and sucessfully looked up:

Thomas The Tank Engine: Thomas and His Friends Help Out. Still No "Best of Percy" or "James and The Red Baloon". "Best of Gordon" is not there either.

Danny, did you by chance send these to dvdtitles@kenwoodusa.com ?

When you do (if you had not) then do like I do and give them the link to your post here in the e-mail that you send them.. At the bottom of your post click on "POST #67" to get the explicit URL.

By my way of thinking it records publicly what you are missing to OG/KW and they can just click on the link in your e-mail.

ALSO KW/OG can see (aka be reminded of) other titles that are missing.

I suspect all you guys are getting tired of my posting that e-mail. It just seems crazy that we complain in a forum about this stuff but don't ACTIVELY e-mail the people that can REALLY do something to solve this. Most are e-mailing I suspect but don't bother mentioning it in there post (hint hint). No offense intended all !! just looking out for us and the future Entre owners doing lookups.

P.S. rbienstock post above is outstanding. OG/KW has all the details they need to fix those.

RE: What method does the OG/Escients use to look up DVDs.

Imagine my surprise when I put "Hollywood Homicide" in my DV5900 that was created with DVDXCopy Xpress (ie. fit on 1 DVD without menus and with only 1 sound track) AND it was looked up and found by the Entre/OG ?!?!

Some information I found while doing google searching and trying to understand "disc id".

Quote:
Q. Will the movie database (Movie DB) recognize multiple pressings / versions of the same movie title?

A. Because there are often multiple DVD versions of the same movie, there are cases where PowerPlaywill recognize these different pressings and cases where it will not.As time goes on, the Movie Database (MDB) will grow. Each time a new pressing of a disc occurs,Escient will need to evaluate the pressing and determine whether it constitutes a 'new' disc or whether itis simply a re-pressing of an existing DVD title that is already in the MDB. Because PowerPlay'srecognition service is so precise, it will 'know' when a disc differs slightly. If the disc contains substantial new info (more chapters, additional movie trailers, modified DVD menu, etc.) then the disc would be considered a 'new' disc and would have an entirely new data record for it inour MDB. An example of this might be the original Star Wars 'Return of the Jedi' in 4 x 3 letterbox versusthe digitally re-mastered, 1999 'Directors Edition' in 19 x 6 anamorphic. Each of these is substantiallydifferent, and would therefore have separate records in MDB.Other discs which are simply new pressings and would be seen by PowerPlay as the 'same movie'.These types of new pressings can occur for a reason such as a change in DVD authoring studio. Thesetypes of new pressings would NOT constitute a new disc, however each of these pressings would haveunique 'disc ID'. This 'disc ID' is Escient's proprietary method of identifying the disc and looking up itsdata in MDB. In this case, each disc would have its own unique ID but each of these unique ID's wouldpoint to the same record in the MDB and the movie would be recognized.Because of this, there are cases where a title that you have seen PowerPlay recognize in the past mayAPPEAR to NOT be recognized in the future. In fact, what is not being recognized is the new pressing.Over time, as we continue to capture new editions, MDB will grow, and disc recognition will continuouslyimprove, while issues associated with multiple pressings will become less and less.

Other info I found on Disc ID from here: http://www.pctechguide.com/10dvd2.htm

Quote:
<snip>Each blank recordable DVD has a unique 64-bit disc ID etched in the BCA. When protected content is recorded onto the disc, it can be encrypted with a 56-bit C2 (Cryptomeria) cipher derived from the disc ID. During playback, the disc ID is read from the Burst Cutting Area and used to generate a key to decrypt the contents of the disc. If the contents of the disc are copied to other media, the ID will be absent or wrong and the data cannot be decrypted. <snip>

I use Fujifilm DVD-RW. I've had the Entre/DV5900 find a few others (DVDXCopy Xpress copied) as well...Charles Angles, Agent Cody Banks...

For anyone who has looked at the structure of DVDs you will see they are fairly complicated. It seems to me that OGs/Escients lookup into their MovieDB (aka VideoDB) is pretty sophisticated if it looks at various aspects on the content from the DVD. NOTE I'm not saying the manual search of movie titles done via the Entre's menu...that is stupid as all get out.
Indy is now found, still no Lion King. It's moronic the way they run maintenance of that database.

Sopranos 4th Season, Looney Toons Golden Collection, and Space Jam were not found.

one of the reasons of buying this stuff is to watch a movie by simply picking it off a list without having to type it in. as it stands, you have to wait a long time for new releases to show up :(
post #83 of 117
i am beginning to lose patience with this. today i sent my list again and got a little more aggresive.

i think all of us should start complaining every time we send them titles.

I hope for your sake that NiteOwl works out that DVD info syncing/fixing program because you can't afford psychology (much more expensive than a hardisk or CuteFTP as I understand!)

Everytime it bugs you send an e-mail to them...it seems for the most part they are adding them based on e-mails unless they are coincidences.
i do email them. i think it's just coincidence for the most part. Sleeping Beauty took a very long time to appear.

I imagine that Escient system suffers from the same problem. It's just annoying to know that if they really cared, they could update their systems ahead of time.

I think the Klaidescope system at 30k will be cheaper than seeing psychiatrist!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Ahead of time?
I'm not sure anymore. It's not something as simple as the title nor disc ID. By it recognizing the partial (movie+sound track only) copies of DVDs I've tried that it find proves that!

I do wonder now if they actually have to have to physically have their DVDs to build their database.

If that were the case, they may save themselves a lot of trouble by releasing a "utility" that end users could run that gathers the details they need directly from the DVD. Meaning we put our DVD in our PC DVD player and execute their PC "utility". It would gather all the DVD structure details (VOB sizes, sound track options, whatever it uses) and put them in a file that gets uploaded automatically or with a button we push. Hell, we don't care if they encrypt that data and store it in a binary giberish file format that gets used for uploading. i.e. They'd be concerned about people stealing/hacking their "VideoDB"/"MovieDB" proprietory database information.

This utility could use our userid (serial number) and password that is already built into/used by the Entre system. They one that is on the Entre user menus.
It is very odd when Disc 2 is found but not disc 1. (same oddity when disc 1 is found and "(Disc 1)" is in the title...but disc 2 is not...obviously they know/have it in their system as a multi-disc set).

Finding Nemo - Collector's editoin (Thx) (Disc 1) <<--- found with manual search
Finding Nemo - Collector's editoin (Thx) (Disc 2) <<--- found automatically
post #89 of 117
I would hope and it would make the most business sense for them to receive a feed from the studios containing DVD release information. I can't believe that they actually have a clerk going out to buy the discs and then actually keying in all this information. It could be that the files/feed that are coming over nightly contain errors or are not being processed correctly by their system.

This would at least explaln the missing titles.

This morning I got a bit steamed when "Finding Nemo" got found (though it required a lookup) and "The Lion King" is still not found. The whole system is broken, IMO. And even though we send stuff to kenwood, we never know whether what we send makes its way to OpenGlobe, or where the breakdown in communication occurs. I wonder if Escient/OpenGlobe have an e-mail address to which one could send unfound titles. In the mean time, I sent this message to Kenwood today. The distress in the message is only partially feigned.

Quote:
Attached is a list of disks that aren't found by the Entre. Many of these, like "The Lion King" are hugely popular, and the fact that they aren't in the database is, in my opinion, shocking. Also shocking is the fact that one can send these lists to Kenwood over and over again, and not only do the disks not get entered into the database, but no one from Kenwood even extends the sender the courtesy of an acknowledgment of their message. This manifestly illustrates the contempt that Kenwood obviously holds its customers. Why anyone continues to buy and use Kenwood one only wonders.
