Thanks to both of you for your help. It's a 1 story house with no big trees very close. We have a fair amount of room in the attic. I didn't realize it would cut the signal in half. That's pretty significant.

I may give the U8000 a shot in the attic and see what happens. If it doesn't work well enough then I'll move it outside. Should I go with a a pre-amp? Any recommendations for one?

I'll keep reading and post back if I can't figure something out.

It's actually a lot MORE than half. Typical reductions from attic versus outside could range from 10dB to 20dB, and signal is reduced by half for every 3dB!

+1! Where was your DirecTV dish? My guess is that it was not in the attic!

The Antennacraft U4000 works VERY well and is not ugly at all. It is basically the main antenna suggested by me to my clients to be used, however, given your guesstimated location, the Antennacraft U8000 may be the better/wiser choice.
Good idea might be to try one of those 4-bay or 8-bay that Splicer mentions here. You can add a hi-VHF antenna if needed for WKRC (channel 12), later.

The dish is sitting on the side of the house just a few feet off the ground on a small pole. I've only ever seen antennas up in the air, but could I stick a U4000 or U8000 on the side of the house? I could probably get wife approval for that before I could get roof approval.

I have two antenna's off the peak of my house. Most people (99%) never see it unless I mention it to them. They aren't noticeable like the old school giant ones.

No. The side of the house or down low like your Sat dish won't cut it. Roof is it really. Unless you build a tower ($$$) that is.

Bad pic of my antennas. Really not even noticeable. I have to tell people they are there.

Yeah... roof it should be, but usually a spot on the roof that is towards the back or the side of the house keeps it out of view from the front, if it's a big deal. Eave mount or chimney mount are both options. But really the antennas look a lot smaller once they're up there than they do when you have them on the ground. My point was just that a dish isn't designed for the attic, and neither are broadcast TV antennas. Lots of people get it to work though, but as Splicer said, if you want consistent results, outside is the way to go. You want that signal to be as good as possible because you will have to account for all kinds of changes as time goes by including changes to the atmosphere, seasonal changes (trees and their leaves coming and going), etc.
Thanks all. That's what I figured, but I thought I'd ask just in case. I'm going to give the U8000 a shot. I'll let you know how it works.

Any updates/status/news for the following:

1.) CP for Channel 36.1 (Daystar)? I think they are putting their antenna on WKRC Channel 12's tower in Mt. Auburn. Just wondering when they will be testing and going "live". Seems like this one's been in progress for like....forever.

2.) Any potential buyers or interest in Elliott Block's stations? I'm glad he's keeping the programming live and on-air during the process. In the economy and market it may be awhile before anyone (except religious broadcasters) get serious about purchasing existing licenses. I did wonder why Daystar or ION network don't look seriously at these stations. For LPTV they really cover the 275 beltway very good with the signal for Mt. Auburn.

3.) When will WSTR/Sinclair add their 3rd sub-channel. I'm sure it's going to be TCN (The Country Network).
I believe Daystar has been having financial difficulties, so that's probably the reason for the delay.

I hope that whoever buys WBQC and WOTH that they get RF 20 up too! Perhaps we can finally get a full-fledged, separate station for the CW here in Cincinnati.

And WSTR's getting another sub? Nice.

The Country Network signed a deal with Sinclair Broadcast Group in August 2010 to be carried on digital subchannels of Sinclair stations in most of its media markets.[1] The station launched on October 10 and is currently available on over 41 TV stations (30+ million households)across the US.

The above grid chart is pretty awesome. Thanks to "Rabbit-Ears" website.

I'm wondering when WKRC will add 5.1 audio, and show syndicated programs in HD? What's going to happen to ThisTV since it's scheduled to be replaced by Bounce TV early next year on 19.2? Will they add a 19.3 for ThisTV?
We have been waiting 6 + years for 5.1. Dont think its hapening anytime soon.

From everything I read 19.2 will move to Bounce TV and, sadly, This TV will go away. Guess they don't want to use more overall bandwith by having adding a 3rd subchannel. However, for some of us, This TV will still be partially available from WRGT 45.2 in Dayton.

MSN Money's "6 useless things you're forced to buy"
First item listed:

A well-known and much despised aspect of cable television is that you end up paying for channels you may never watch. In fact, on most cable systems, sports channels such as ESPN account for 40% of programming fees -- bad news if you couldn't care less about baseball or the Lumberjack Olympics.

In a study last year, the media and communications analysts at SNL Kagan found that fees paid for sports programing typically exceeded those charged to systems by more-watched networks such as Nickelodeon and USA. ESPN amounted to more than $4 of the average cable bill, compared with 8 cents for the Food Network and 21 cents for Syfy.

That matters a lot for the individual -- who might be a foodie or sci-fi fan who never watches sports -- or in the aggregate. For example: In the low-sports week of May 30 to June 5, according to the site TV by the Numbers, among cable channels in prime-time hours ESPN was ranked 19th, immediately behind the Food Network (No. 17) and Syfy (No. 18). Is EPSN really worth 5,000% more than the Food Network month in and month out?

Plenty of people don't think so, but consumer calls for a la carte pricing have been rejected and dismissed by networks and cable companies.

The old-school business model could be disrupted as more and more people "cut the cable" and instead use Netflix or go online to stream Netflix or to such online-only services as Hulu and Apple TV for their favorite shows. Recently, Microsoft announced plans to bring live television to the Xbox console. (Microsoft is the publisher of MSN Money.)

Industry groups such as the Consumer Electronics Association, however, are not quite ready to concede much impact from those alternatives. A survey released May 31 of 1,256 adults found that 76% of respondents said they were "unlikely or very unlikely" to cancel pay-TV service; just 10% said they were likely to do so.

Further solidifying the current cable-TV business model was an opinion issued June 3 by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit in San Francisco. In the case of Brantley et al. v. NBC Universal Inc. et al., a three-judge panel ruled against the plaintiffs in the class-action suit and affirmed that "bundling" practices and requirements for "must-have channels" did not run afoul of antitrust laws.

I did the cut 3 years ago. For the most part I dont miss it at all but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't wanting ESPN on occasion (and TNT for the NBA playoffs). I do have to get the most basic $13 package to get the Cincinnati locals out here in my radio wave black hole in Fairfield but I can live with that. I get all the Dayton channels almost perfectly in winter (no leaves on the trees) and it mostly usable this time of year but you can't count on it 100% of the time.

Thinking about picking up another HD Homerun tuner and having one dedicated to Dayton OTA and the other is already getting the Cincy clear QAM channels. This will come in handy for the NFL season, especially since I am no longer a Bengal fan after 41 loyal years.

I cut it just over three years ago as well. I have two HDHRs, one with an antenna facing Cincinnati and one with an antenna facing Dayton, both in my attic (despite the above chat, I get both cities perfectly - call it the luck of my house location).

Most of what we have always watched are major-network sitcoms, so no need for cable for those. My wife was watching too much trash TV ("Rock of Love" and the like) just "because it was on", and she actually made the call that we should drop the cable. I was fine with it, since I watch way less TV than her. The biggest thing I miss is the Reds - if you could pay to get MLB.tv in the local market (not "out of market" only), I'd be set. I occasionally miss ESPN, but most of that can be covered via certain, uh, quasi-legal websites, if I really, really want to watch something (very few and far-between). I don't care enough to stay up and watch Monday Night Football unless the Bengals are playing, and when they are, WKRC picks up the game anyway.

According to John Kiesewetter , the Live Well network will debut on WCPO 9.3 on September 5th.

Looks like a good change of pace from RTV and ME-TV.

Cable is but a distant memory.

2.5 yrs now for me, but, I gotta say, I literally got shutout last year with the college football bowl games. There was only 1 on network TV and it wasn't even one of the top 10 bowl games IIRC.

Besides that I'm satisfied and $100 richer every month at least.

Man, I hope there isn't any bad weather during football season, this will really annoy me:

Feels like they are taking up 1/4 of the screen.

Oh, the black on the right side, looks like I took the pic with a camera but that's a screenie direct from Win7 Media Center, I resized them to 50% for obvious reasons.

Another disaster from WKRC. Would you expect anything else?

Just to note, they've got the same map and completely unnecessary blue "banner" running as of right now for a Severe Thunderstorm Watch. WCPO has a small map but no obnoxious banner. WLWT and WXIX seem to have made the common sense call of restraint and are not blocking or mauling the picture with anything currently.
Of course a few days after I say that, now WLWT has a top banner for the severe t-storm warning tonight. Not as bad as WKRC for sure, but it's there. I'll be interested to see if they put that up for watches now as well.

What's also interesting and maybe even a little "cool" is that the county map is outside the 4:3 "safe" area.
Yep they left it up!
The other night WKRC had a weather alert ribbon across the top during the local evening news (6 pm) and it sure looked like they squished Rob and Cammie down to fit below it, since it would have probably cut off the tops of their heads. It was like when you put your widescreen TV on "stretch" to fill the screen with a 4:3 show, except it wasn't anamorphic stretch, it was just a stretch. I'm sure the anchors appreciated being shorter and wider.

If you look closely at those golf pics from last weekend that was actually part of my indignation. Not only the wasted space but the slight crop causing the black bar on the right AND it looked stretched.

All in all, I complain alot but think where television was even 10 years ago. I bought my Sammy DLP in December 2003 and that was still almost considered getting in on the ground floor, and there was alot more 4x3 SD programming than there was HD. Seems like yesterday I was watching the NBA playoffs and I cant recall which local station was pulling some low rez stretching shenanigans causing what we, here, referred to as the "jaggies". That's likely a very interesting stretch in this thread but I'm too lazy to look it up right now.

Moral of the story: I'm spoiled, so ignore me. (And yes, still chugging along on the 2003 Sammy DLP, third bulb is about 11 months old and 2nd color wheel the same).

True, we've all become quite jaded. But we're in the minority - look no further than the fact that WKRC has some of the worst treatment of HD yet their morning, evening, and nightly news are far and away #1 in the city.

Oh, the JAGGIES!! That's WCPO of course. The issue lasted well over a year. Here's a link to one of my posts on that waaay back. Unfortunately the screen shots are no longer available though. There are MANY posts before and after the linked one here, but it was the easiest for me to find via search.
