UPN HD News!

Thread Starter
An engineer from the Dallas-Fort Worth UPN affiliate, KTXA-DT/TV is reporting that effective next week we'll be seeing Wednesday's broadcast of "Enterprise", "Jake 2.0", and some of the Friday night UPN movies in HD! So this is major good news, even if it does create a new programming conflict for me ("Enterprise" and "Smallville", head to head in HD)...

For those who are curious to see the original posting for themselves, go to <http://dhtg.napurano.com/> and follow the links to the HD programming forum.

This would be good news. Except both UPN affliates around me are on Lightning Bug power levels.

Still maybe this is what they have been waiting for.

What does this mean for WWOR in New York? Currently it is sharing bandwith with Fox 5 and using a very small amount of it (looks like MPEG1).

My rectal sphincter tightens. Oh no! I want to watch both Smallville AND Karen Sisco AND Jake 2.0! Zounds! PVR with three tuner, please...

trekkerj,

I think you answered your own question, Fox will have to give up bandwidth to allow this. I'll be surprised if we see WOR in HD before the upgrade is complete on the ESB.
And why wouldn't they, they don't need it for "Enhanced Definition".
Cool if true. Hope Philly's UPN 57 carries the HD signals.
Unless the UPN network itself provides HD, that will just be a local upconversion - not true HD. There are very, very few UPN affiliates across the country with a digital station capable of HD broadcast in any case. In my area there is no digital UPN station at all - only a weak poor quality analog one broadcasting from Tecate, Mexico.
Anyone know which affiliates were involved in the HD test last month? That might give us a better idea of which areas will get UPN in HD. New York doesn't look good though, with the crappy second subchannel...

Hopefully Ill be getting UPN that night....

The Atlanta UPN station has shown some of the paramount movies Top Gun, to be specific, in HD.

I've seen some of the Paramount movies in HD here in Detroit, until I forgot to watch for them So does that mean Detroit will likely be HD on these new shows? I record Enterprise and Jake 2.0 on digital SDTV upconvert now just because my Tivo is busy with Smallville & Angel (not HD here yet) at the same times.

This is all very good news to me if true.

Good news for Philly!

From an Email I received this afternoon:

UPN 57 is pleased to announce that ENTERPRISE will be broadcast in HDTV on Wednesday nights, beginning this week!

Wednesday, October 15
8:00 pm ENTERPRISE - all new!
"Exile"
Hoshi receives a transmission from a powerful telepathic alien. Directed by Voyager's Roxann Dawson.

Anyone have any info on New York?

I wish I lived a little further south to pick up Philly. No chance of that here.
This is consistent with the unofficial word I had a couple of months ago (and reported on my web site www.dtvmax.com) that UPN would have Enterprise in HD before the end of this year.

Great. Sometimes living in or near a big City pays off :p

Hmmmm. The just added the pisp guide data here in Birmingham - wonder if they are getting closer.

Well my local UPN does the one movie in HD every month as well. Our local UPN station is WTOG-DT in Tampa, Florida. Also we just got official word that our local WB station or WTTA-DT will be going HDTV by the end of this year and they are owned by Sinclair. Our local UPN is owned by Viacom by the way. So should I be too far fetched to see Enterprise in HD on October 15th on WTOG. Also I've emailed my local UPN station several times over the last 8 months and have never once got any response back so I'm not bothering with that again.

Great to hear confirmation from at least one other market.

For those who are wondering about the strength of the information -- "TechnoBill" (the original poster of this info in the Dallas Home Theater Group forum) is an engineer with the local CBS/UPN duopoly who has been very good about posting information and keeping DFW HD viewers informed about what is going on with both stations. He definitely was not referring to upconverting the SD signal to HD, because KTXA-DT has been doing that since they signed on the air, so that would hardly be groundbreaking. And they've been passing non-UPN HD programming for a year or so (currently the "HDNet lite" OTA service during the daytime hours).

It'll be interesting to see which markets get this next week.

What a head ache, I record Angel, Smallville and Jake 2.0 since i can't get them in HD and watch Ed and West Wing since they are, now this messes up my whole plan...

Who'd a thunk it, too much HD! ;)

Columbus, Ohio UPN shares programing with WB as there is no WB here. They make it very nice an broadcast WB stuff a day after, so we dont miss the UPN. They have been doing HD for almost 2 years. Cant wait!
From what I have heard Viacom has been getting dedicated HD Sat. Receivers out to all of the stations that are capable of sending out a 1080i signal. So yes WKBD-DT 14 is all ready to go.
My local UPN doesn't even seem to have a digital tower going. Didn't the FCC rules apply to UPN stations that they are at least supposed to have a digital tower, even if they aren't passing the HD, by now? I want Enterprise in HD, dang it!

This is why it would be nice if DishNet or Directv could be allowed to carry networks on a national level such as Dish's CBS-HD. Especially for WB & UPN staions which might not be available everywhere.

Enterprise in HD drool.....please oh please.
Enterprise HD would definitely be a very good thing. And I'm also somewhat enamored with the cute scientist girl in Jake 2.0. So this should maybe be a very good week.

Yes, a lot of things would be nice. World peace, eradicating poverty....

Unfortunately, the odds are about the same for both your and my wishes.

All of you are missing the most important thing about UPN beginiing HD broadcasts: We are one step closer Woooooooo! to Smackdown in HD. Stephanie McMahon in all of her surgically upgraded splendor. Wooooooo! Sable and the 38 Double D Sable bombs bursting across the big screen in full HD glory. Wooooo! Torie Wilson. Woooooo! Dawn Marie. Woooooo! Now can you dig that.....
