Film Reel Table

For those who have built their own film reel tables, where did you buy the glass for the top? Mine is complete except for the top, which I have only been able to find in a 19" diameter and my Goldberg Reel is 17". I could live with an 18" diameter.
I'll post pictures when I'm done, as I did it a little different by using part of an old floor standing lamp for the base rather than a film reel.

Thanks in advance,

Pat

My goldberg reels were 15" and my glass top is 17" I think the two inches was just right for a nice looking table. I went to a local glass shop and got a very nice heavy table top for $16 each.

If you have a Michaels crafts store near you you can buy 18" glass rounds made just for table tops. It's heavy duty and has nice rounded edges. About $20.

I got mine at Pier One Imports. They have several sizes. Mine is 20" on a 15" reel. It's 1/2 inch thick and has rounded edges too. I think it was a bit more than $20 though. Oh, and don't forget the clear stick-on bumper pad things. The work great for keeping the top from sliding on the reel.

Thanks for the suggestions. I got an nice thick 18" one from Michael's. It was 19.99 but I had a 40% off coupon, so it was $12 and change.

Thanks again, Pat

What did you use for the bottom of the base? That looks pretty nice, I'd assume it'd be a lot less tippy than with a reel on the top and bottom.

It's the base to an old floor standing lamp. It's weighted pretty well and is quite sturdy.

How were you able to attach the reel to the bottom of the lamp? Sorry for all the questions, I would like to be able to make one of these also but do not like the ones with two reels on them.

What do you think? I'm going to replace the glass though, This one's a little to big and hangs over the edges about 1.5". I'm still waiting on my second reel to arrive so I can make another one.

What would you recommend as an acceptable overhang ? The table looks great from up here.

For mine I want about a half inch.

Jon_p_s, The lamp had a part that was used to hold the top light fixture to the main pole, it had a large male thread on one side that threaded into the pole and a female smaller thread on the other side that would accept the hollow threaded rod which is used on lamps. I drilled out the center of the film reel to the size of the threaded rod and slipped it over the rod which I had cut to a length a little longer than the thickness of the reel, I then used a thin nut which is typically used on lamps. Hope this helps.

WojtekZ Mine has a 1/2" overhang and that is right for me, another half inch would be okay accept I have small children and thought I would minimize the number of times they knocked their head on it.

Pat,

The table looks great! I will be building one or two soon.

Pat-- an EXCELLENT idea for the base. I've got two of those (cheapo) torchiere lamps that are just sitting around here... waiting to be resurrected.

Can someone provide the link to where I could get a reel? This looks like a neat project...

A lot of us "table builders" got our reels from ebay. Just do a search for "35mm Goldberg" and you should find some. There are a few places that sell them as well. One that comes to mind is rsem.com - search for reels.
