I've had their new motorola HD-DVR/cable box, the 6412, for a few days now. It is simply great...IMHO it's the best thing to happen locally to HD enthusiasts in the past year. At least for Comcast subscribers.
My contract w/E* is up this month, and I was deciding who to choose for my next programming provider, and I've gotta say the Comcast offer was hard to beat.
I initially signed on w/E* when they were giving new subs an 811 for free w/a one year contract - at the time the best I could find a D* HD receiver for was ~$300. As a die-hard
Tivo enthusiast (two S1 tivos still pluggin along) I was dying to get back to DTivos, and waiting for the price of the HD-Tivo to drop into my stratosphere - hasn't happened.
With the 6412 out I called Comcast and, long story short, they'll be out Thursday to install with no installation fees, the $9.99/month for the 6412 and
a $25/month programming credit for 16
months for switching from satellite. All in all, my monthly cost is lower, for a higher programming tier than I had on satellite and when/if Comcast switches HD equipment I'm out nothing.
I'd have to use an HD-Tivo for more than 8 years
to get value over the $9.99/month lease fee. Since D* is dumping Tivo well
before then, and has committed to moving to MPEG4 (which the current HD-Tivos can't do) it was a no-brainer.
