This >>still<< makes no sense to me.

But I'll take the 6208 as something to play with alongside my Tivo anyway.
Motorola never came out with an SD DVR ... so locations using a Motorola system aren't likely to offer one (an SD DVR).

Not sure, there may be a few non-Motorola SD DVRs that can run on a Motorola system ... but for most cable systems it's probably going to be easier to start deploying the 6208s instead of trying to integrate some other manufacturer's box into the sytem ...

Have they resolved all hardware issues, as far as you know? Software issues? (What's the latest firmware on your 6208?) If it's not ready yet for general customer launch, are they telling you what the holdup is?
I'm waiting for a swapout of my box as we speak. I personally have had only minimal issues with mine, and definitely worth living with for the time being. The main issue I'm having now personally, is the studdering video and audio when using the firewire ports. I can't archive anything to DVHS until that issue is fixed. Whether it's connected to the other issues I'm not sure (but I think so).

If I were a betting man, I'd say they won't be out until March sometime at the earliest.

A real Tivo it's not, but to record HD AND not have to buy the box, it's great. As I stated above, if I wanted a PVR strictly for SD viewing, I would go with the standalone Tivo, not this box. The recordings are time based, not name based (saw the last 10 minutes of Fear Factor and missed the last 10 minutes of Las Vegas on Monday night), the hard drive is a little small (means I have to watch stuff fairly soon), and the guide and menu system need work. But to watch "Ocean Oasis", "The Godfather", and other cable HD programming when I want to is priceless!

I live in Howard County MD between Wash. and Balto. I just called my local csr and was told they have a pvr but it is STANDARD definition. She did not know the name or model number and would not find out. They want $10.95 a month for this box. It better be HD!

Does anybody know what is happening in Howard? I can't stand the thought of speaking to one more un/misinformed CSR.

Thanks.
Who makes your current digital cable box? It sounds like the CSR may be describing the SD DVR that SA makes.
I have the Scientific Atlanta - but it is High Def and does not have a PVR.
There is mention, either earlier in this thread or in another thread, of both an SA SD DVR that is now available, and an SA HD DVR that is now in beta.
Does anyone know, or know how to find out, when the 6208 is going to be rolled out in particular Comcast markets? Comcast's reps won't tell me because they obviously can't be bothered to find out, or perhaps the company just hasn't decided yet. Anyway, I'm in Northern Virginia, so if anyone knows about that area, or any area, please let me know. Thanks so much!
Do you mean the 6208? I've had the 5100 for 9 months in Baltimore and we've had HD here since Nov 2002.

Are you asking about those areas that don't Comcast hasn't upgraded yet to HD?

The 6208 (the HD-DVR one) is still several months away because I understand they are still having software problems. It is being advertised on Comcast sites, with no date.

Sorry, maybe I'm confused. I am indeed talking about the HD-PVR, I guess the 6208.

I do have HD in Arlington, it's some Scientific Atlanta box. That's all they have here.
SA has a PVR in testing, and I believe in Northern Virginia, but I am not sure if it is HD. You probably won't get a Motorola STB if you are now using SA.

I currently have a SA PVR and a separate SA HD cable box in Manassas, VA. We have Comcast and the last time I asked if they had a combined product, the sales person had no idea what I was talking about and stated they only have the digital box, HD digital box, and PVR offered. It would be nice to have a HD PVR, since TiVo won't be releasing their version any time soon.
Some of the people I talked to there said there would be an HD-PVR soon. I imagine that must be the Motorola 6208. Why would they roll out a 6208 to some areas but deny it to others?
Just got off the phone with Comcast. They said the Motorola 6208 HD-DVR is in testing in the Bay Area, but not ready for rollout yet. The CSR was unable to give me a target rollout date. He did say that the last he had heard was now the end of February.

Anyway a January rollout now looks like it is NOT going to happen.

March or April may be more realistic, based on what I have been told. But you never know, the testing may go better than expected and they may get a lot of inventory for distribution quicker than expected.

I received an updated 6208 box today, firmware 7.05. As I waited for the guide info and other stuff to get loaded, I checked out the firewire, and did so again later this evening. Unfortunately, the firewire ports still have a lot of artifacting and glitches. I must have had a decent box in the first place, as this one is no different than the last, and none of my issues were corrected.
Are you beta testing them? How did you get a box?
Peter0302, You will NOT be getting the Motorola box, you will be getting the SA-8000HD box when it comes out. It is supposedly in Testing in the NoVa Area but I do not have specifics.

"We received your additional programming inquiry regarding the DVR/ HDTV
converts. I apologize for not offering this converter in your area at
this time.

Unfortunately, there is no time frame available for the launch of these
converters. Comcast will notify their customers of any changes made
towards their products and programming. "

Cable boxes are highly dependant on equipment/software on the head end. So ... they'll be rolling out Motorola boxes in places with a Motorola head end ... and Scientific Atlanta boxes in places with a Scientific Atlanta head end.

Also ... even for places with a Motorola head end ... the 6208 may depend on other Motorola software upgrades that have yet been done everywhere ... or some particular locations may be running software (funky third party stuff like VOD, interactive TV, etc) that isn't yet available for the 6208 ... or incompatable ... or may cause some sort of issue.
Here is what I do while waiting for HD/DVR box. I split the cable signal and run it to the HD box and one input on tv and also run it to the DVR box and then the other input on tv.. Only drawback is you can't record HD but at least I can watch HD when I want and record shows also. DVR remote runs both so only one remote needed.

Our local cable co was scheduled to start using the 6208 this month, now they say they (6208) have been recalled and don't expect to have HD for another 90 days......

Don't you need to officially release something before it's recalled??? :D
post #205 of 885
Motorola recalled them, not the cable company.

Anyone know why? Will they be repaired or replaced with another model?

There were some hard drive issues, among other things. Take a look further back in this thread for more information.

I have a "new" box, and it seems to be the same as the old, if not a little worse. Hopefullly the hardware issues are resolved, and just a firmware update will start to take care of some of this stuff...
Hi Xebec ... welcome to avsforum. I used to work for a company called Xebec.

Many of us have been very anxious to receive our Motorola 6208's. Do you have any more information on the Motorola recall, how widespread it might be, or what problems it is addressing?
I got some info from an very knowledgeable person at Comcast that the issue with the 6208 is that there is a 6408 which has a second tuner...

have only a 5100 till Friday, does this make sense?

he also told me early 2Q for 6X08 deplyment in Southeastern PA.
Apparently Insight Communications is deploying the 6208 now . Maybe they're less cautious than COMCAST?
