tylerSC, earlier I had trouble receiving WYFF 4 OTA. I've tried moving the antenna to point the Greenville/Spartanburg/Asheville towers, no success.

Once again, I've got WBTV 3, WCNC 36, and WJZY 46 OTA from Charlotte, NC hours ago.

Right now I'm scanning channels 19 were found, and unfortunately still no WYFF 4 nor WYCW 62. frown.gif I hate living in fringe areas frown.gif

I'm using AntennaCraft C490 Long Range Antenna. I've called RadioShack to explain my signal problem and to see what amplifiers they got available. Unfortunately they only have the inline-amp which I'm using. So out of luck frown.gif

I agree. it would be difficult to consistently receive a station from 100 miles away. I am about 107 miles away from the Raleigh stations; and I've never seen any of them, even when atmospheric conditions have been more favorable. Under (normal) conditions here in the eastern US, I think 60 to 80 miles is usually considered about the limit with residential home antennas.

In fringe applications, a precise antenna and preamp setup is critical. Usually for distant UHF, a 91XG from Antennas Direct is recommended, and for HiVHF a Winegard 1713 is suggested. And the original dual input CM7777preamp. And a rotor. I believe J.T. Bell in Clinton, SC has previously posted pics of this exact setup. The next best solution is perhaps a Winegard 7698 or Antennacraft HBU55 combo antenna. And Antennacraft now makes dual input preamps to replace the CM, with similar low noise specs.

Yes, and the overall consumer reviews on amazon are very good for the UHF 91XG. Of course, it is highly directional too, which means a viewer (particularly in deep fringe areas) would want to have a rotor installed (as you mentioned before) if the goal is to use this type of antenna to watch channels from different markets. Of course, in the upstate of SC, I know HiVHF is also used, so an additional antenna, such as the Winegard 1713 would be needed along with the UHF 91XG.

Something odd is going on WYFF 4 I'm watching Jimmy Fallon and they show the Severe Thunderstorm Warning crawl that expired 8 days ago. It saids "Severe Thunderstorm Warning; until 8/15 6:15PM" August 15 was 8 days ago, they forgot to turn off the crawls or maybe the person at the control run had been drunk. What's going on Doug?

Also when I get my next paycheck I decided to buy a preamp one of the cheapest is RCA TVPRAMP1R. I can get WYFF 4 and WYCW 62 off and on. Last time I scan my channels, it's pointing to the Greenville, SC towers and still not getting 4 nor 62 not even WLOS 13 (but I got 13 during 7pm last night).

Did you read the weather warning correctly SpencerKarter? Perhaps you are the one who is drunk. Or maybe not. I don't know because I am not near the TV myself right now. Perhaps someone made a mistake over there, like you suggested. As for the RCA preamp, it does get good reviews, and has dual inputs for both UHF and VHF antennas. And it claims a low noise figure for DTV reception. So maybe a decent choice there. It has been priced around $23.99 with free shipping.

tylerSC, Does the RCA Preamp can help me pick up all the Greenville, SC signals plus adjacents from Columbia, SC or Charlotte, NC?
It may help. But, bottomline, you need a good antenna and probably a good preamp. Like I said before.

I see that the WLOS tower on Paris Mountain was approved. Any idea how long before they turn it on?
They probably have a certain time frame before the construction permit will expire. But glad to see it is approved, and hopefully they will get it up and running soon. Hopefully it will have a decent power level as far as translators go, so reception will be good.

I can get WLOS 13 over the air. But on WSPA 7.2 (MeTV) when they show local commercials they don't show it on 16x9 unlike sister station WJBF 6.2 or non-sister stations WCCB 18.3 or even WOLO 25.4 they show it in boring pillarbox 4x3 instead frown.gif , get with the program 7! Worst of all WSPA does not show Access Hollywood in HD and WYCW does not show The Insider in HD, but WSOC in Charlotte, NC does show The Insider in HD.

Also, I've picked up WOLO from Columbia, SC. And three Charlotte, NC stations once again (WBTV, WCNC, and WJZY) earlier tonight. I've watched a little bit of The Liberation of L.B. Jones staring the late Roscoe Lee Browne on Bounce WBTV 3.2 and right now watching a pre-Peter Graves Mission: Impossible rerun of WSPA 7.2 (MeTV) yes the ones with Steven Hill in the first season. smile.gif

That means no inadequate reception from channel 13! smile.gif

But right now I'm having trouble getting WLOS 13 over the air. I hate seeing the BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH with the words "No Signal". frown.gif

I've check the map of my location of the Longely-Rice Coverage map, it's inadequate in my location frown.gif

Plus, I can get WOLO 25 from Columbia, SC as the strongest signals in the Cola area besides WIS 10, WLTX 19, or WACH 57. Why is WOLO's signal stronger in my area than WIS, WLTX, or WACH over the air?
I wish WYFF 4 didn't interrupt the NBC feed during national commercial break to place their local ads.
tylerSC, The last time I scan for channels. I get WSPA 7 (CBS), WLOS 13 (ABC), WHNS 21 (FOX), etc. But no WYFF 4 (NBC) nor an adjacent NBC affiliate like WCNC 36 nor WIS 10 nor WAGT 26. Which means no NBC! frown.gif
I hate living in deep fringe areas. It's disappointing. I hate it when signal drops out.

How many times should I scan for over the air channels everyday?
Well I've picked up WCWG 20.1 RF 19 (The CW) from Greensboro, NC which is 177 miles from my house. That's what I call TV DXing. But unfortunately, no signal. This is my first time picking up a NC Triad station over the air. Once again I've picked up WSOC 9 and WCCB 18 from Charlotte, NC as well. I bet tylerSC likes it.

Right now I've picked up 49 channels. Now I've got a mediocre -fair signal of WCWG 20 and showing an infomercial.
Yes, SpencerKarter, I do like the Charlotte channels, especially Channel 9 WSOC and Channel 3 WBTV. I get Channel 9 most evenings on 9.1, and 9.5 off and on during the day and after 5pm. But Channel 3 is 100% all the time. And I also get WJZY-46 and WCNC-36 all the time. And WMYT-55. As for GSP, I like WYFF-4 and WSPA-7. And I do get WLOS-13, although it is the most challenging local channel. Ironically, the out of market Charlotte channels from Dallas, NC are easier to receive.

Just noticed this morning. The new Jim Bakker Show is still broadcast on WGGS 16.3 for those who may be interested. And Tammy Sue is now appearing on the program again after a period of seclusion following the death of her mother Tammy Faye. Channel 16 was one of the original flagship PTL affiliates, as Jim and Tammy were close friends with station founders Jimmy and Joanne Thompson. And Tammy Faye's final Christian program was the You Can Make It show on Channel 16 with Joanne. The new Jim Bakker Show originates from Branson, MO, where Jim has built a new Christian retreat.

tylerSC I've picked up nearly every Charlotte, NC stations over the air at this hour. WJZY 46 in Charlotte, NC shows Dr. Drew's Lifechangers in 16x9 HD while WYCW 62 shows it in crappy 4x3 SD. So I e-mailed WYCW and telling them why they showing it in 4x3 SD here instead of 16x9 HD?

It's great that I've picked up the Charlotte, NC stations over the air in my area during the afternoons. smile.gif

I've got another question for tylerSC,

Would a preamp would work best if I want to get adjacent locals like Charlotte, NC or Columbia, SC over the air besides my home market of Greenville, SC?
Yes, SpencerKarter, a preamp will probably help with your distant channels. For Charlotte, I suggest a 91XG UHF antenna and a Kitztech 200 preamp. And that same antenna would probably help with WYFF4 and WHNS21.

tylerSC I've recently e-mailed Channel Master and I've showed them a map of my location of the over-the-air signals in my area. They say the best preamp for my location would be CM7778.
The new version of the 7778 that they now offer is not as highly regarded as the original model, and the noise figure is not as good. Plus it no longer offers the separate UHF and VHF inputs. But they probably recommend the moderate gain version to prevent overload from your local SCETV Channel 38. Otherwise they might have suggested the stronger gain 7777 version. But that Kitztech amp has very low noise and gets good reviews. The Kitztech 100 has a lower, adjustable gain if overload is indeed a concern. Unfortunately, Channel Master is now a new company owned by PCT, and their original highly regarded amps and antennas are now being phased out and replaced with inferior imitations.

tylerSC had you heard WYCW 62 preempted Judge Judy repeats for lame travel specials today?
No I was not aware of that.

Can someone here confirm that Cool TV is gone from WMYA? Thanks.

I noticed the color bars on Cool TV last night too - The program guide says 'Future Programming'. My guess is they are bringing back the WLOS 13 simulcast for the Greenville market. Hopefully it is only temporary until the Paris Mountain transmitter is online.
