I've read things on-line saying that 720p (because of it's progressive scanning) is better than 1080i (and is why sports broadcast in 720p and not 1080i) the site said that 720p refreshes at 1/60th of a second and 1080i refreshes at 1/30th (I believe thats what this said, I'll try and dig up teh site to be sure) any suggestions?
The 720p / 1080i debate still is on-going as to which is better. 1080 provides more data in it's full frame, while 720 has more info on the screen at one time & in shorter time-frame. 1080i refreshes 540 lines on the screen in the 1st 1/60th of a second and then 540 then 2nd 1/60th with only 540 on the screen at a time. It takes 1/30th of a second for a full frame. 720p paints all 720 lines in 1/60th of a second so in the same time, it's giving 2 frames to 1080i's 1 frame. The issue is, 1080i 'full frame' is 360 lines more data than 720p, but it just takes longer. So, it's hard to say which is better. The networks that concentrate on sports feel 720p is better while other networks feel 1080i is better for content with less motion. Hard to say...it's all opinion.
It's usually better to give your device the native input it displays. That said, the DVB318 has some issues with 720p and it has fewer errors and other problems when set to 1080i. On my Z4 720p projector, just like Chris found with his displays, setting the DVB318 to 1080i looked better than 720p so it's not always clear cut. Honestly, at this point, if I was buying a player, I'd get an Oppo as it is near perfect in testing for 720p or 1080i and no pixel cropping like the DVB318 suffers from. Still has slight macroblocking issue as the majority of Faroudja based upconvert players do, although not as bad as many do. For the price, it is a great deal. Faroudja is still great but has that trade-off. Macroblocking will differ per display and per settings. I'm using my HTPC for the most part anyway, so the DVB318 will do as a backup.
